Well guys, I finally had to sell my 1999 Silver Proof Set. I just couldn't hold onto it any longer. The price on those things has gone crazy...and I don't believe it will stay that way forever. I sold it to a local coin shop for $275. That's a hair below Bid right now, but just fine with me. I may have been able to sell it on e-bay or something for a bit more, but I haven't done any e-bay stuff before and don't really like thinking about the hassle. At any rate, I really had no sentimental value attached to it and $275 is $275 more than I had yesterday afternoon. I thought it was a good deal considering that I got it when it originally came out. Now, what to buy next with the money burning a hole in my pocket ??? :D

Sounds pretty good to me. I am one of the ones who did not get the 99 silver set and have regretted it ever since. It just hard now to fork over that much.

I fell your pain JoeMoney. Fortunately for me, the Mint sets aren't something that I'm really into collecting, so it wasn't that hard for me to part with it. Even though I made good money on it, I feel for those of you that need it for your sets. If you wait long enough (maybe a few years) I think it will probably go back down some though.

I gave one of my 1999 sets to a grandson. He was born in 1999. The gift gave me more pleasure than selling the set.

    Gary,

That sounds like a great use of your coin set! Congratulations!

Yeah, me too. I managed to get every proof set in silver but the 99. By the time I started collecting proof sets, the things had gone to 250.00 and I could
not spend that much on my collection at the time. I could kick myself now for poo-pooing the sets back when I could have gotten them for a song from the mint. Damn!! :(

What is driving the '99s so much? Is it dotcom memories?

These sets are going for 350+ on ebay right now, crazy...

I won an auction where the guy had a couple mint sets and in the middle of the picture was a 1999 silver proof set, but nowhere in his description or title did it have silver proof.

My final price on the 1999 was $160 after selling off the other items. ;)

    I now have a complete 1999 - 2005 set!

I missed out on the 99 silver proof set but do own the 99 clad set (quarters only).
Have you guy's seen the prices on the 01 silver &clad sets? combined they
can bring around $300 and i'm tempted to sell and take the profit.
On the other hand i would probably end up regreting it down the road.

What do you think the 2004s will bring 3 years from now assuming the new nickels will take off? This set would have 5 state quarters and the first 2 nickels, I am hoping they appreciate substantially.

Silver Surfer, I really think it depends on what you like and what you plan to compose your collection of. For me, I'm not that interested in collecting Mint sets, so it wasn't that big of a deal. If this is a collecting area of interest for you, keep them. If not, you can hold onto them and gamble that they may keep going up. Or you can get out now and sell them and be happy that you made a nice profit, regardless of whether they keep going up or not. I sold it, and now I can buy something else that I'll get more pleasure out of!

That’s true, as I said it's tempting to sell but I doubt I ever will.
I got interested in collecting in 99, and not knowing much at the time I decided to forgo buying the 99 silver set.
The real dilemma is that I own every other clad proof, silver proof and mint unc set 1999-2005,at least I had the foresight to get the 99 5 quarter set so i'll have
A complete set of the clad proof state quarters.
I have a strong feeling the 99 silver set is going to continue to go up. I wouldn't be at all surprised if it's selling for $500 bucks when the state quarter program ends in 2008.

I got lucky I just started collecting proof sets in 99 and got the silver and the clad sets. I kept buying them so now I have a completet 99-05 set of both silver and clad .So far I havn't sold any but with the price of the 99 I'm starting to think about it.

    Ah...so it does....and the year 2000 PF set says don't buy ;)
I'm a off and on collector of PF and Mint set....when I buy the set goes nowhere...when I don't it goes up....still I have a nice large collection of UNC and PF sets that I might sell sometime to fund another collection....

Sounds like you regret it. Don't feel bad, I would too.

Here's my theory on that - When the resale price of a 'year 1' set goes high, the next year people by a lot of year 2 sets. Now, there are a lot of the year 2 sets out there that people are willing to part with, the price does not go up. Year 2 sets don't appriciate, so no one will buy a year 3 set. Now the year 3 set is rare, so the price goes up.

This theory also serves as a good excuse: "Honey, I didn't want to have to buy that either, that's why I had to buy it. I'm doing it for the long term financial good of the family."

I still havn't figured out how to answer "Since that set went up so much, why aren't you selling it?"
