This has been asked many times in different ways, but I noticed that: 1911 D mintage of 933,600 VF around $213 1911 S mintage of 988,000 VF around $76 Now according to various price guides my numbers may be a little off, but you get the drift of what I am asking. Why the disparity in value?:goofer:
Obviously, the 1911-D is rarer at least in better conditions. Rarity has little to do with mintage. For instance, the 1914-D (1,193,000) Lincoln goes for $920 in XF while the 1931-S (866,000) only goes for $116. People kept a lot of 1931-S's, but not the 1914-D's. The 1914-D's are significantly rarer.
Tex Apparently a lot more collectors in San Fran at that time who saved some pieces for today's collectors. FYI: I would pay strong prices for either one. The '11 S I got in a F-12 in 2002 and haven't seen a better one since.
Yep, a lot has to do with survival rates. And from what I have read this is more notable with Barbers. People either saved them or used them till they were wore out.
