Today I would like to announce that I no longer will be collecting Flavian coins. From now on I will be collecting only raw US coins. Below are the first acquisitions in my new collecting area. Goodbye Flavians! Hello loose US change!
I am constantly on the lookout for GOLD coins (foreign or US) in my loose change! Sadly, I rarely use currency nor coin, virtually 100% CC for all my transactions.
Funny, I made a similar decision today. No more ancient coins, I got bored, my ambition is to start collecting modern coins, exclusively slabbed. Already discussed with a dealer and sold my entire collection. Lost a part of the sum I spent but I needed a budget.
What a wonderful lot – great new acquisitions! I especially like the one on the bottom left. What a unique and aesthetically pleasing design. It's a pity that there is no NFT or crypto-version of these. Otherwise I'd be tempted to sell my ancient coin collection, car, and house to go all in and invest. I'm pretty certain that would be the prudent decision.
I found this weird dupondius in my change. It has Fecunditas holding a baby on it. I can't find it in RIC, Cohen, BMCRE or Sear.
I don't like the edge, I would bet casting seams are clearly visible. And the obverse with those eyes, I suspect it's a Chinese souvenir. 2002 suggests it's from year 20 AD (they always put the age of the coin on these types, not the date). I doubt it.
@David Atherton : Make sure you check those coins carefully for errors. Errors are very common in circulating US coins, and are always worth big money!
That's a great idea. And by chance I find myself in possession of the small hoard below. Loads of rare and high grade stuff in there. Since ancients are becoming so unpopular, I guess my treasure must be worth at least a Kimon tetradrachm and a Titus pulvinar set. So if anyone wants to swap, just pm me – that's your opportunity!
@Orielensis PM sent. I will remove my Kimon tetradrachm from the collection (the dealer was distracted and we agreed on a bulk price for my collection, I am sure he didn't notice it). I would agree with the exchange but please send me pictures of all the coins in the hoard, put them on a scale (or perhaps 2 scales to be sure the weight is correct). I don't collect ancients anymore but some of the coins you have look a little strange and I don't want to buy fakes.
We have a deal. And why don't you just get all of them slabbed instead of bothering with weights, attributions, and pictures yourself? I'm certain most of them are at least MS-66.5 triple star or so, which will increase their value about sevenfold. I will of course accept returns on all coins that get sent back unslabbed and reimburse you with appropriately large fragments of the Kimon.
There might be a lurker in that group - I think the one on the top-right might be Vespasian's great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandson, Vespasian XXXVIII...not the mover and shaker that Vespasian was, but he did end the urine tax.
