I don't think that "eliminating a day of delivery" would "eliminate app. 17% of delivery jobs" and certainly not 17% of labor costs as tons of it are in retirement already. This is another example of the large union types getting their way to much and not allowing a company to compete. Which is very typical of anything the government does. IMO
"I would say this is true but what about all of the packages that are mailed because of the internet. I do a lot of ebay business and spend over $300 a month mailing packages Shatzy-Do you use the overly expensive and highly inefficient Postal Service or UPS or Fed Ex to ship your packages? Lack
17% of delivery jobs sounds right. With 6 delivery days now, each day is roughly 17%. Also, you can't compare an 80% cost of labor to General Motors, or any other manufacturing biz. The Post Office does not manufacture anything...they just take a letter or parcel from one place and move it to another. Kind of like a police or fire department. I bet their labor costs are 80%.
Actually they already try(to compete with FedEx etc.) but I know what you're saying. I have a brother in law who works for the usps and he says some workers have already lost their jobs and they have been letting workers go for quite awhile. Personally I don't know how the post office has lasted as long as it has with a stamp only costing 0.44 cents. I think we get very good service from our boys and girls at the post office and when compared to other countries we are getting a steal of a deal!! That's all I gotta say, and sure, they're not always right and sometimes they make mistakes but you gotta admit they do a damn good job. Also, I'm still sticking to my idea that they should merge with the US mint.
I don't know how many will remember this but in the early days of the internet, the USPS actually proposed charging 1 cent to deliver emails!
