So totally new to coin collecting and considering making my first purchase (starting small) and thought I'd get thoughts on whether this is a good deal or not. (to stay on the conservative side, I'll say all of the coins are graded Good(most seem better than that) I'm thinking about spending $18 (small purchase I know). 9 Jefferson nickels 39,40,41,42(S),43(P),45(S),47,49 3 Liberty nickels 1900,1902,1907 1 - No cents Liberty 1883 If it's not worth $18, what *is* it worth? Thanks very much.
The 9 Jeffersons in the grade of GOOD are worth face value or slightly more in the case of the Wartime dates (42S, 43P & 45S). I don't think the lot are worth $18. I'd say closer to $14. But that's just MY opinion.
The Liberty nickles come to $12... as for the jefersons... I agree with freezerburn, at a grading of Good, maybe face value to .20 cents... But then again, I'm just a guy with a red book... So I could be wrong...
Hi Nitro, Good advice has been given to you, but to add, a lot of other members would advise picking up Redbook. From there (in the future) you will be able to see if the price you're paying suits the actual value. Welcome to CT.
Well, I'll go the other direction. As a lot, $18 is a great bargain. True, all the coins individually might not add up to quite that much, but if bought individually would cost far more after shipping or time spent. The convenience of a lot like that makes the price well worth it. And, it's only $18. Guy~
Great start on your nickels. Yes it is a resonable price for that lot of coins. Search around through, sometimes you can find bargins, especially in Jefferson nickels, even early dates. I just got a 1950 D for $3.00 at a flea market...grades about AU.
Look everywhere for coins. Ebay...Flea Markets...Garage sales you name it OINS ARE EVERYWHERE!!! The hunt is on...that's the fun of it.
I see $7 here and not a 1 cent more and I would not want them for that. Not trying to alarm you or run you off, don't get me wrong but in the shops and shows I go to no one would pay even $7. Many people on CoinTalk have differring values compared to me though as we just do not pay like many on here do, nor do we expect to ever.
I don't think $8 is unreasonable but any higher is going to get you buried in them for a lifetime unless silver goes up.
Quick update Hey all, thanks for all the advice. So, decided to bail on the nickels. Since then I've been buying locally--mercury dimes at 1.20 each (vf-xf condition as far as I can tell comparing my quality to grading guides), and roosevelt dimes (xf-au) at 1.10 each. The other day, I made a bigger (for me) purchase. Just wanted to get some feedback as to whether this was wise or not. I paid $105 total for the lot (11) of Liberty halves. First five pics are hopefully attached below.
I think you probably did OK for the price you payed. Nice group of Walkers. I think I like the well worn (G-4?) '17 s (obv) the best. Rare Lady, that one....
