I just read a number of articles on the 2010d Zackary Taylor dollar coin. Apparently, there were some Zackary Taylor coins (2009) left in the edge lettering machine when they switched over to the 2010d Native American coin. The person that found the 2010d Zackary Taylor coin found it in a roll of US Mint "direct ship" Native American coins received from the Mint in January. That coin has been verified by NGC and conditionally valued at $10,000. The Mint seized the remaining rolls (700,000 coins) and are searching for error coins to destroy. One other person reports finding two (2) Zachary Taylor coins in a Native American roll they had, but didn't check the edge lettering before spending them. So, here's my delemma...I received $500 worth of "direct ship" 2010d Native American dollar coins (20 rolls) from the Mint on 26Jan2010. I've opened two (2) rolls so far (no Zackary Taylor coins) and have 18 rolls left to open. Should I... A. Just have fun opening the rolls...hoping to find the "lucky lottery ticket"?, or B. Assume there's no chance I could be that lucky and just sell them off on eBay as "possible error rolls"? I'm leaning toward just opening them up and hoping for the best. What would YOU do?
Actually, I think there were a number of CT folks that bought these rolls about the same time. I would love to see someone on CT find one!!
I think I'll send at least one of the rolls to jaceravone and stainless as a prise for the Shriner's fundraiser...could be worth $10,000!!! :high5:
18 weeks of fun Every Saturday morning for the next 18 weeks, make a cup of coffee, sit down at the kitchen table & carefully search one roll.
Be the Fool I vote~ Be the Fool rather that Make fool with Option B. My mind would be more at peace knowing I looked into the rolls myself rather than hoping to dupe some fool into bidding too much on a hopeless hope. You would feel even worse if the buyer got what they hoped for, should they win, and you would miss the chase of looking for the impossible. I vote for option A.
open 'em, open 'em, open 'em... what are you waiting for, open them up and if you get that lucky coin or two or three... then you can buy loads more FS gold coins. :eating:
"Life's a box of chocolates", No, I'd say in this case life is like Russian Roulette. I wouldn't take my chance at a 1/6, I certainly wouldn't in a 1/? Personally I'd open them, but then again, I was one of those noobs (not the prefered word I'd use, but the nicest word I can get away with) who paid $20 for a so called "Unsearched roll of Wheat cents" off ebay, LoL.
They're only worth face anyway. Crack 'em, and good luck, though I am of the firm belief that the error is unique, or close to it.
Well it seems like the concensus opinion is to "Open 'em Up". Frankly, I'm glad...I've never sold anything on eBay and don't want to get started now; I might not be able to stop! I like Collect89's idea...open the rolls one at a time. First, I'll put one roll aside for the Shriner's, then I'll have seventeen (17) rolls to open. Instead of opening one (1) roll a week, I'll open one (1) roll each night...and take a picture of the newly liberated coins along with the remaining rolls. Should be fun...
I would open them. I just got my NA's yesterday and and even though I bet they were the recalled ones I am opening mine and looking for a taylor.
