Hi all. Not sure how to title this one. Ghost? An extra fainted 4? Thanks for any info or critiques. E67632A0-ECD6-4F22-A046-9F2F0DA2AF46.jpeg CB434807-BF48-477E-8138-1A896550E1D6.jpeg

    Stray mark.

If you look at how dies are made, the date is added to the Master hub, although it may have been the master die in 1994 (members - please correct me if I'm wrong). The date is already in place before the working die is made

    Mint makes a Master Hub
The Master hub makes master dies
    Master dies make working hubs
    Working hubs make working dies
    Working dies strike coins

So if the mint did make a mistake with the digit on the Master Hub or Master Die, all or nearly all 1994 quarters would show this variation

For other new collectors. This is one reason why it's important to take time and learn the minting and die making process. You'll waste less of your searching time chasing "errors" that are not possible

The one question I have is, why do the authors of books etc say to examine a coin closely
Well I was just looking through coins and more or less I noticed it. Thanks. I have another 94… I shall check it again.

Not trying to buck your reply. I will check others. But this is the comparison of two. But I understand completely. Ty! A1B555BE-0127-4288-B0DF-9B6668CC6E79.jpeg

I agree that it's probably pareidolia. If the impression was incuse, it might have been a dropped element weakly struck into the field. But I don't see that. It may be your eyes and mind are playing tricks on you. If it's any consolation, I can see what you are seeing spaced out a bit to the right of the actual 4 and seemingly equidistant from the rim.

Dagnabit Pam, I thought you had something there. Maybe a time traveler from the year 19944 dropped a coin.
Seriously, I'm not trying to make fun of it, but the photos become confusing when most don't show anything and only close-ups do. I see what you are referring to, but have no clue that if it is truly another 4, how it got there.

Lol! Thank you. Well I posted another 1994 to show it was not there. But y’all see it at least so I’m not on the crazy list. Getting close!
