It looks like a counterfeit to me. I have a counterfeit one that looks similar to yours. Here's a picture of mine. Charlie
If you can weigh it, it should weigh 27.22 grams, if it is real. I think that if it was authentic, it would have some luster left for such a high grade. Charlie
I don't know...I don't see the signs of a Cast copy....but that isn't the only way they were faked... Weigh it and see what it is....I'm not sure but it may be real. Speedy
Im not sure, It looks like there is a little bit of toning on the bottom of the reverse, which would be a good sign, but that might just be the photo.
I don't see anything in the pictures that jumps out at me screaming fake, but the picture isn't the best and there are always limitations on making jdgements from photos. I will say that I can't recall having seen a fake with a tall S mintmark before. I also think that you should follow hrough wih Charlie32's suggestion and weigh the coin. More than 90% of the commonly encountered fake trade dollars are significantly underweight.
I'd like to see a closer view of the feather ends of the arrows in the eagle's claws. I tried blowing up that section of the posted picture, but the resolution isn't high enough to see the arrows clearly.
I weighed it and it was 28.0 grams but that includes the flip box and staples in it. Here's better and larger pictures of it. Front Back
Wow a nice one there. I honestly don't know though, I don't really collect US coins so I could be horribly wrong One thing that bugs me is in the word "Liberty" especially the letter "i" - it just seems that it was chipped off. Another aspect is with the woman's right leg, and where you can see another crack. I wonder if the problem is with the die, or it was meant to be like that. P.S for others who are viewing the picture on imageshack - you can click on the picture to make it even larger.
Take it out of the flip---or take another flip and put the same number of staples in it...weigh it and see what happens... Speedy
Just by the strike of it alone, I would say a fine EX-fine to AU-50 coin!!"Original", just my opinion......
Thanks guys. I just got done selling it to a guy for 200 dollars. I told him that there was a chance it was fake but he said he thought it was real. If it was AU-50, I might have gotten more for it but 200 is twice what I paid for it.
I think you did fine! Most of the time when I have a coin that is faked I try to send it off to ANACS before I sell it but with this coin I think I would have been selling it without the slabbing....I'm pretty sure its real! Speedy
The weight is close enough. Usually the fakes weigh in the neighborhood of 22.5 to 23 grams. A real one weighs 27.2 grams and a 2X2 with staples is usually around 1 - 1.5 grams. 28 grams is way more than the typical fake plus 2X2 would weigh. I just looked at the new pics. Smooth fields, sharp crisp denticals, no pits, or pimples around the stars. I'm better than 95% convinced it's real.
