i was at a coin shop and he had just recently got a coin back graded. i dont remember if it was 1883 or 1884 CC morgan dollar. it was graded NGC MS62 PL STAR. it had real nice fields but it also had a baggy look to it. my question is what kind of effect on value the extra designations would have based on grade alone.
The first thing we need to know is the reason for the star designation. The star designation is awarded for two different reasons. The first is exceptional eye appeal usually related to rainbow toning. The second reason can be explained in this thread: http://www.cointalk.com/t46534/ I believe that the standards for proof CAMEO designations have been expanded to include PL & DMPL designations. It is important to know if the coin in question was given a star for it's eye appeal related to toning or if it is just DMPL on one side of the coin. If the coin has toning enough to warrant the star designation, it would most certainly dramatically affect the price of the coin. PL & DMPL designations will also increase the value of a coin, however, I don't know very many collectors who will pay a premium for a PL coin that is DMPL on one side.
well the star basically means it is a 62.5 as opposed to a 62 or a 63, the PL might add $20 to $30 and the star I would say adds less than 5 as the diff between 62 and 63 is less than 10 for those dates. SO call it probably an extra $30 total around there and you're looking a $175 to $200 if you've got a great dealer $190 to $215 if you've got a good dealer and $210 to $230 if you have a by the book dealer then $230+ for a ........ dealer (you fill that one in yourself).
The star designation does not mean PQ for the grade. Here is an excerpt from the NGC website and the associated link. http://www.ngccoin.com/coingrading/stardesignation.asp
it was DMPL on the obverse. im not really in the market for morgans but it was something even id consider buying. bqcoins if i remember correctly he said hed have to get $165 out of it. its a smaller coin shop but for what little he has i can see myself collecting alot more with his prices. lol
Oooooh. Aaaaaah. :thumb: That is a beauty! Good move going back for it! For your first slab I'd say that one is a hit. A CC on top of it all. Really nice.
