Based on the 1g weight of the slightly larger Japanese one yen, I'd guess about .95g+/- a tad.

This 74D is 2.9g. Any ideas? BTW-scale is correct w/other copper cents weighing 3.1g.

    Yep,

A slightly underweight, plated cent is most likely. Many coins were plated to be parts of cheap sets sold by some dealers, years ago. Many are still plated today and sold on TV.

There is an outside chance that the coin was struck on an unusual planchet but there is no way to tell that from the pictures.

    Thanks,
    Bill

For some reason I thought you were asking about the U.S. 1974 experimental alumiunum cent, the real one???

I thought it might be, before I knew the weight. Still wondering what is up with the coin. 0.2g lighter and on a white non-magnetic metal.
