I had bid on a MS AV Solidus of Anthemius and lost it to higher bidder. Today, I got my Roma Invoice and to my utter surprise I was now the proud owner of a Solidus from this Emperor. Western Roman Empire AV Solidus ND (467AD) Rome Mint 4.37g. 21mm. 12h obv: DN ANTHEMIVS PFAVG Helmeted/ pearl-diademed/ cuirassed bust facing/ holding spear/ shield SALVS REIPVBLICAE Anthemius and Leo I in Military Attire/ standing/ facing/ holding spears and globus cruciger between them RM in centre/ COMOB in exergue RIC X 2813 Depeyrot 5916 Lacam pl. CXVII Class III var 1 DOC 915 Mare Nostum Hoard
Two hard late Roman solidii for the collection! Happy for you, man. Good thing gardening season is around the corner.
Thanks svessian Man. I wished I was living in Germany or Norway/ many reasons first I would have a much cooler climate to work in. Here in Summer, even without ever wearing a shirt its "sweaty hot" and miserable. Plus I would love to have the stronger "euro"/ it costs me a fortune to convert our worthless money into your euros/ third....in Europe you have more chances of finding hoards of gold/ silver coins. John
Hope you don’t have to pay import tax on them. I have to pay 20 something percent if I buy a coin from an area where it hasn’t been circulating in the economy. Somehow that always come as an unpleasant surprise…. I brushed the porch floor with sandpaper today, and blessed the sunny 7 degree celsius day.
The Basiliscus and Marcus solidus was truly a coup. I was traveling during the auction, or I might have tried for it myself. IMO you got a great deal on that. The Anthemius reverse is similar to my example with the standing figures much better struck on yours. Seeing as both coins are from the Rome mint, and were struck over a relatively short period of time, it is curious how different they are. Placement of the legends differ on both the obverse and reverse. Your emperors have a diadem or taenia on their foreheads, while mine have a periscope. My emperors are adapted for amphibious warfare.
John, Congrats on scoring this very rare solidus of Anthemius ! Coming from a documented hoard gives it greater importance . Anthemius spent most of time fighting barbarians & was murdered by his barbarian general Ricimer. The portrait on this coin is very crude, suggesting the Rome mint must have been staffed by barbarian craftsmen at this time....
Very nice. I was impressed by the Basiliscus, but this one is even cooler in my opinion. Rome mint and one of the last emperors..... The celator goofed slightly on the trajectory of the spear (left-right).
Thanks Al! I once had a chance on a Solidus from Anthemius in EF/ it ended up going for 14K This one is on sale for 15K/ second sold in 2014 for 20K. However the Basiliscus & Marcus is much rarer.
I wonder what kind of vessel would have been carting around 400+ solidi? Given the presence of a few western solidi I'm guessing a wealthy merchant's ship?
That is certainly odd seeing as you didn't WIN the coin. I would be asking lots of questions before i even considered buying the coin. Is it possible to check the bidding to see who WON the auction ? I would be very interested in finding out if that person bid me up & then didn't pay for starters
@panzerman Congratulations. Luckily, you still wanted to pay, for the coin. However, it makes me wonder. Because you lost the auction for the coin, would you legally be obligated, to pay for the coin, if you didn't want the coin?
I think I am super happy that things turned out in my favor. The coin is part of the famed Mare Nostum Hoard and featured in a writeup. Could have been a glitch in the auction/ I bid 3200 was leading green on screen/ then a red sign outbid/ but next bid was at 3400. So, I think it was a glitch on my screen. No matter, I will TAKE that coin. I have seen these go way over 15K in MS. There seem to be lots of diff. types according to Wildwinds. Like Al stated, this is probably a product of Rome Mint with German employees learning the trade..... I am way more surprised at winning that Basiliscus & Marcus type coin for a paltry 2K. The more common Basiliscus alone goes for more. I can only imagine what both coins would have realized in a Heritage Signature Auction....
Great pick up @panzerman. I was watching them very closely but had my targets set on the Gordian II, also snagged the Pertinax. I just received my invoice from Roma, it’s going to hurt.
