I agree. I think it's a 64 and the toning might even push it to 65. I like the old slab though, so I will keep it where it is.
Sorry guys, but if your standards have you buying that coin as an MS-65, you need to make some adjustments.
Maybe so. However, I have seen worse 65's in PCGS and NGC holders. I really don't care about the grade, I like the coin. All I am saying is based on today's standards, I could see this coin in 64 or a 65 slab. I disagree with your statement, however, because it sounds like you are saying grading is set fact rather than subjective. At least that is how I am reading it.
All I will tell you that based upon my 60+ years of buying and selling, buying traps is not a fun way to collect. Dealers have also sorts of sales pitches when you are BUYING something. When you are trying sell, they will have all sorts of ways to knock you down. When you know how to grade, and when you know you have a good item, you are dealing from strength. When you have "yes, but coins," you in a poor position. This is an 1885 Morgan Dollar. It is a common date. There are thousands of them. You don't have to buy over graded coins to get this date. You can ignore me. That's fine. I'm just trying to help people from falling into some of the mistakes I made when I was younger.
That's fine. I don't hate what you are saying. I have been collecting for 23 years and I buy what I like. I don't really play the grading game. It is common date which is also why it's staying in the ANACS slab. Just a piece to add to my Morgan set.
Nailed it scratches on Obverse. Learning from Morgandude ! Dude knows silver LOL Although I was in early
No way that coin is a 65. I think they were low at 63, but that was the standard for 63 in the days of those older holders. It isn’t close to 65, really. Accept it as a 63-64, with attractive toning. I’ve seen thousands of Morgans, and it does not have clean enough devices on the obverse for a gem grade. Is it an attractive, desirable Morgan? Yes, but not close to 65. Enjoy the coin for what it is. I had it at 64, and it has the eye appeal of a nicely toned 64.
Usually there is a big difference between MS-64 and 65. If you ignore that and pay prices based on PCGS numbers, you can be in the hole big time. Collect what you like, but when you over pay, you have less money for something else.
