this is a wheat penny I got from my in law, what made me put it here is because of a lump in the rim and the size of the rim, which covers half of the word trust, also the lumps in the reverse side of the coins rim. My scanner may not show it fully but is this a common error with this date? 1948

This coin has been damaged/altered outside the mint. A sure indicator is that metal overlaps the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. That's impossible in a genuine mint error.

I have also saw quatrers that people have altered in a very similar manner. I believe it is from a light tapping aroumd the side of the rim and they will go around and around the coin to get this effect. At least that is what I was told.

It's called spooning. If your search this forum for that you will get many examples.
