Yes - that's a great coin. It seems AMCC is another sleeper venue, not frequented by the same crowd as the major auctions. It's easy to imagine that coin going for a multiple of that price at a different venue.

    Indeed !

Here's another eBay pickup of mine from a few weeks ago (listing photo).

I paid $13 for this one - evidentially it didn't thrill too many others! :)

Can any LRB fans guess why I bought it ?

Does that say MAXIMIANVS on the obverse legend? It's an unlisted emission for Galerius of the Hercules Farnese.

    Yes! :)

It's Galerius, with this being an unlisted reverse type for him, and also from the "no crescent" issue that RIC only mentions in the footnotes.

Here's the "after" photo - "Galerius cerviche".

It's a better coin than the seller advertised.

The seller had bought the estate of some detectorist. It was listed as "Unidentified Roman Coin. Buyer to ID, Metal Detecting Find". Classic eBay!

That is a really nice catch. I didn't know that this is the only VOTA type of Constantius II.

Yes, although I should clarify that I meant as caesar (i.e. issued by Constantine, alongside vota types for the other caesars). He did later issue his own vota types as augustus.

Part of the reason is that the coinage was in transition to the new sole-rule types introduced in 324 AD (with vota types for the caesars dropped at that time). But given this brief issue from Thessalonica, it might be expected that the other mints would have followed suit.

A couple years later we also have the oddity of only Ticinum recognizing the decennalia of Crispus and Constantine II by issuing VOT XX for them.
