Ok, I spent a decent sum on a couple of coins and my wife is placing the kabosh on coin spending. I can’t blame her, but I love this beloved hobby. I looked at my Lincoln Cent collection and I have major inconsistencies in the grades. Many not so rare dates are in the G or VG of F grade and upgrades can be made without spending a lot. I thought digging into the cent inventory at shops would be fun.

Wish I could say that. Go get 'em. My set is based on finding in circulation. So, I can't make myself buy to fill holes. I will never get an 09 S, S VDB or 14D and a couple of the others. They never came up in my pocket change or store searches. My kids will just have to live with it like I have since 1948.

As long as the bills are paid my wife doesn’t care what I spend on coins. I consider myself fortunate.

I just recently took my Lincoln wheat cent collection and upgraded every coin except the few key dates and the coveted 1909 s vdb. Those will stay as is, I think those are fine. When I originally put the set together, I spent most of my money on the key dates. I thought that it was time now to update the rest of the set with mostly ef or higher grades. I finished last week and I think I spent about three hundred for all the upgrades. Not too bad I think. I hope you find what you are looking for to refine your collection, I think you will be as happy as I am with the final results. Regards.

Next up is the mercury dime set.

Well, I've been working on my Lincoln set on and off sense around 81/82 at first I wasn't really that serious, I metal detect and so some of those ended up in my collection early on. As the collection started to grow I tended to get a little more serious with it.
I had some bucket list coins that I thought wasn't likely going to show up,
    09SVDB, 55DDO, I thought maybe a 14-D to be possible, maybe an 09-S.
So, not with total intentions but the route I worked on was filling holes, get the collection, I did decide pretty early on to upgrade the metal detecting ones..
So, I got down to where there wasn't many holes to fill, and maybe 4 years ago I bought a 09-S, then about a year later I got the 14-D well the collection became more enticing. I started looking around for a few badly needed upgrades.
Ebay raw was great for me, I'm talking there was a lot of .50 and $2.00 deals and no worries about counterfeit with the super common coins.
Then my album binder from the 80's looked like crap, so I bought two new albums and all new sleeves, divided the wheats into one album the rest into the other.
Pretty nice, then those missing holes created more of an itch. Also by now a good bit of the 59 and up was getting a lot of UNC add ins.
When it came time to fill the 09SVDB hole I decided I didn't want to us household finances to buy it. I started collecting BAGS of smashed aluminum cans! all my pocket change, copper wire, and if I did something for somebody and they wanted to give me $10 or $20 I tossed that into the pot.
And I bought it, I'll spare you the story of how I got ripped off on the first one being a counterfeit!!!! That about ended my collecting days, but I ended up with my bucket list 09SVDB.
Then I jumped back over to doing more low cost upgrades for awhile. But I had the date range complete from 09 to current!
I found that there were so many on a budget UNC Lincoln's even in two or three coins sets for a couple of bucks that I bought and added to the Memorials.
Then the collection had a LOT of appeal (motivation) my finances changed in my favor and I went out on a limb and bought a 55DDO I told the wife that that coin was an investment, sense 1955 this coin has never went down in value! (remember investment)
Over the past year I've been working my way backwards adding the proofs, I'm back to 1938. I think I can pull off a 37, that 36 may be a stumbling block and beyond that forget it.
Seriously, coins like the 09SVDB, 14-D, 55DDO can be thought of as an investment. I can sell my 09SVDB, 55DDO, and 14-D for $3,200 Ask the wife what's she owns that's worth $200.00 on resale? LoL!
Same with my guns, I can't say I've ever made money on them but I've never kept them long enough, but it hard times when we needed money, it was my purchases that turned enough revenue that actually made a difference, she told me "I don't have anything that's worth anything to sell" But she spent just as much money on garbage as I spent. I've no plans on selling my coins, but if I got hungry, or needed a house payment, etc.... I would, and she's got a $500.00 iphone that's worth about $20.00
Some kind of an Apple Tablet, that cost $600.00 that's worth about $50.00 now (and dropping)
For your bucket list coins, think investment!
I know a guy who the only thing he wants his wife to get him for a birthday gifts and Christmas gifts is some coin he has on a list of coins, she's figured where and how to get them, she's happy, he's happy!
Think outside the box! When I started looking for little pockets of extra cash, it sometimes showed up in unexpected places (Honest Money).
You can work it out and get that 09SVDB, JUST be very careful that you get a genuine one, they're fake abound.

Well I bought # several nice Lincoln Cents, including a set of UNCs fron 1944 to a 1958. It will be interesting to see how this set improves. I don’t want to break the bank here but focus on more consistency in the set

We have a compromise. I collect coins, she collects my cash. So everything works out even.
