Pam that is a WAM! Notice how the M is centered between the A and E! That is the main thing I look for to determine between CAM and WAM!

Pam, do you have a Red Book? If so, take a look at it and you'll find you are correct. The C in CAM does stand for close! On a CAM the M is not centered but is much closer to the A!
Sooner or later you probably will. In some cases I can’t help but laugh. The reason is, A close AM looks like it’s touching a wide AM does not. To me, that’s easy to say but others, after years of collecting just can’t spot it. But don’t worry, there’s other simple issues I can’t get and I’ve been collecting for years and other collectors can tell you in a glance. I can’t see the difference in a Kennedy Half Dollar Accented Hair Variety but it’s there. Such is life.

Pam I hate to say it but your 1998 is a Close AM. Some here have said that on the Close AM the A and M are almost touching, but that is NOT always true. If the die has been heavily polished the letters will be a little shallower and further apart so they will not be almost touching. That's why it is better to compare the distances separating the AM AND and the ME. On the Close AM the separation of the AM will be noticeably smaller than the separation of the ME. On the Wide AM they will be equal and the M is centered between the A and E. Even with heavy polishing while the AM get further apart so does the ME so the M remains centered on the Wide AM coins and uncentered on the Close AM
