OK I barely know anything about these 2 sets and I would appreciate if someone would fill me in. the only thing I could find out is that the mint did not issue any those 2 years and the ones they did issue were for private party's. I have seen 2 of these 83 going for $52 and 82 going for $30. I dont know if those are good/bad/average and was looking for some imput. thanks -Shrek
I visit the Mint in Phillie in 82 or 83 and got a special souvenir set in blue, but only Phillie coins. Wish I got a boat load. Think Denver did some also.
Both Mints sold souvenir sets in 1982 and 1983 and they can be found on eBay with a little diligence. They are basically like a regular US Mint Set but, as holz said, they come in a blue envelope and are of the one mint only. You had to visit each Mint to get both sets. I think that these are probably the best and last source of hi grade 1983 Washington Quarters
There were also some private companies assembling their own 1982 and 1983 P & D mint sets. I've seen them going for over $30 on ebay. Since they are not actual mint issue, I doubt these are worth even looking into.
I just checked ebay and they are around the price that I seen. I wish it was something worth wild -Shrek
They often come "doggy" to so wait until you can view the sets in person at a show or shop. It's the 2 quarters and the 83-P&D half's that are the most sought after and if you just want these wait for really good ones. Also keep in mind by the strictest terms, These sets are not really needed to complete a mint set collection as the MINT did not officially make them. Just a little point you may (are may not) find helpful. One more hint - I have known folks to take thier time and obtain individual coins cheaper. The toughest of all is the 83-P quarter.
Question how are these sets not considered to be made by the mint if they were old sold at the mint that a person took a tour of during those years? Quartertrapper stated that some were sold by private companies, is there a way to tell if I am able to get these sets in my hands?
wow i just bough an 83 set for 7 dollars at a local antique store. I think he had at least one 82 and maybe another 83 I may have to go back ad buy those if they sell for 30 on the bay. Edit: just thought i would add that it was in the envelope from the mint.
I did not say or mean they wern't some made by the mint but that there was a break in official mint set production for those two years. In other words when viewing a mint set colletion most dealers do not expect them to be included but if they are it's bonus. The souvener sets sold by the mint should have a mint medallion of some type in the cello with the coins if I remember right, the ones made by outside suppliers should not. I may be wrong about this one and will say so but that is my take on it for now.
Shrek, There are sets (due to lack of official Mint sets) that were put together by private firms (like Krause Publications) that look kind of like the Mint sets that we are used to seeing. The Mint Souvenir sets are very specific and here's a description: Blue envelope, one pliofilm sleeve containing all 5 coins and 1 copper Mint medal from that Mint. (A different medal at Philly than Denver). The privately made sets typically have something that looks like the typical plastic mint medallion stating that the coins are uncirculated. If you like I can try to post a pic tomorrow. Today is a little hectic.
oh, and BTW while most dealers wouldn't expect to find them in a complete run of Mint Sets, I included them in mine so as to complete my clad unc coin set. They aren't necessary for the set to be complete, but when a set does have them, it makes the set, IMHO, a more desirable set.
Hey guys would you mind just putting your knowledge in my brain this information is really interesting and informative.
"That" you must earn and if pressed I really don't think I would want "all" of these guys renting space in my head with thier knowledge! Some, maybe - all never!
