United States: copper Draped Bust half cent, 1804, "Spiked Chin" variety Obverse: Draped Bust of Liberty right. Reverse: Denomination within wreath, fraction below. Issuer: United States Mint, Philadelphia. Specifications: Copper, 5.4 g, 23.5 mm. Grade: PCGS XF40; cert #44307721. Reference: Numista-16948, KM-33. Provenance: ex-David Lawrence Rare Coins, Virginia, USA, Internet Auction #1210, 27 February 2022. * Notes: It is believed that the "spike" which protrudes from Liberty's chin on this variety was caused by a loose screw contacting the die. The characteristic parallel ridges in the right obverse field were likely caused by the the threads of that screw. Comments: I have always liked this variety and used to own a PCGS VF20 example with a very similar appearance. 055000S
To make it more interesting/appealing there are four Cohen varieties of the Spiked Chin half cent. Yours appears to be a C-8, R-1. The main PUP for this variety is the small die break over the R in AMERICA on the reverse. I've got this one and a C-6.
Not an expert at all, but I too find it mighty appealing. Gave it a nine. PS what a nasty thing to do to a dog
You think that's nasty?..... good thing you didn't stick around after we droped him off at the vets. Lets just say he's barking all the high notes in the Vienna sausage dog choir now....
All I was saying is that the coin looks silvery, not coppery. Here's a coppery copper half cent... The coin is super nice, just not appealing to me from a color standpoint. Maybe it looks different in hand.
It is dark. But glossy-dark, not dull-dark. I like the look, personally. But yeah, it ain’t for everybody.
