I think it looks pretty clear that it's fake, but just to satisfy my curiosity, can we see a bigger picture of the spot under the shoulder where the initials would be?
I tried to zoom in as much as I good, but the image is to low of quality and its just pixelates (falls apart) But, keep in mind that it only takes ONE real marker to be FAKE, we have two already, (1) Way to much gap between the 9 & the 1 (altered 4) (2) Mint mark location isn't correct for a known 14-D. So to be able to actually see the designers initials would be an added plus, but its not really necessary in this case. Also, the better done alterations of the 14-D the people that do them will take the time tool or work at removing the initials, or disguising being able to see them. 14-D vs 44-D There is also a slight difference in the font style used in the two mint marks
The initials were incused into the curve of the shoulder area, at an angle to the field. The dies do a fine job of it though. They are very crisp and defined under magnification. It would be extremely difficult to remove their having been there without leaving traces of your handi work in my view.....martha
Thanks for that thread Bones-65. I learned a couple ways to spot an altered "44 thanks to you and others on here. Like scrutinizing the fours like a couple of you did. Well done. One of the stand out features of C T is I always learn some thing on here every time that I read it.
