While working at dominoes I get the luxury of going through all the change and bills for star notes web notes ect I opened a roll of quarters today and bam this thing was just so much more gorgeous than any other quarter in the roll well long story short I looked up to see if on the new state quarters that the San Francisco mint had normal circulated coins well come to find out they don't unless some poor sole opened a proof set and used it well its not a great find but somewhat rare for me to find I found what I believe to be a proof coin in my quarter roll at work glad I went in on my day off lol
Yep Looks like a S Business strike. 976,420 Minted. A keeper for sure. I love finding S mint coins in the wild. Proof or Business!
S mint business strike (They did around a million of them for each design 2012 to 2020) and now immediately go give the coin a good soak and rinse in acetone to remove the fingerprints you put on it in that last picture. Unless you want them eventually etched into the surfaces.
I'm curious about the lack of detail in the building. All of those that I have seen have intricate detail on the brickwork of the building. Normally you can see each course of bricks, and the individual bricks in those courses. Is this an sms coin or what ? Where did the detail go?
I'm not sure what issue it is like I said I was counting the drawer and that's when I take time to go through change and when new rolls of coins are broke or bills are brought to the store from the bank I have gotten some nice bn and 1 wn but other than that this is prolly one of my better finds that I can be happy with and not excited to be disappointed lol but isn't that how coin hunting goes haha but yea when I opened the roll It was in with all 2021 quarters and even then it stuck out way more than the new coins and the rim of the coin was so crisp and detailed I didn't know what it was until I came home and did research to find that they say only p or d struck coins were in circulation and a s mint shouldn't be in circulation unless someone spent a family members proof set or they spent their own set but what is this business strike that's a new one for me elaborate on what that is and what's different from circulated and proof if you don't mind that is I enjoy learning new things and giving myself something new to look for Thanks guys
I do see what your saying now after looking at the building and then mine the detail on the coin you showed has way more than what mine showed if any so yea idk what that means or changes on the coin itself lol I'm by far no expert it obviously shows w me posting coins that aren't worth the effort I put into finding them lol so sorry if I can't answer the questions asked I can take more pics get a better light source change the background the coin its on just ask and I'll do what I can to better help someone help me figure out what or where this coin was ment to be haha so again sorry I'm not much help and from the community comments there are people that know what it is or could be without having setting right in front of them
And is it even safe or smart to wash a coin with anything other soap and water I only ask cuz the one said to wash it in acetone to get the figerprint off of it and well now I don't need my finger print on a coin that I want to keep so someone lmk if anon was right to do that or what
It's a business strike coin not a proof. https://www.coinworld.com/news/precious-metals/s-mint-quarters-from-us-mint-bring-premiums.html
I don't know why a business strike or a proof or an sms or which mint it came from, would have such drastic differences in the building detail. Op coin has no texture on building walls. Wth ?
"Op coin has no texture on building walls. Wth ?" Typically the S mint business strike coins are better struck and have more details. The OP's coin may have had a little grease fill. Better photos would help also.
I just looked at 5 different 2016 Harpers Ferry quarters at US coin. D mint - P mint - S mint - S mint proof - S mint silver proof. All have the detailed building. The op's coin is the only one I can find like that. Hmmm?
I think you are posting coins that are worth the effort. That one sure caught my eye. It could have passed as a grease filled die at first glance I suppose. But if it were I think it would have had to be done like stop the presses, use a stencil and a small brush and some grease to keep that strike thru just inside the confines of the buildings perimeter. Just to keep a distinct line of demarcation between grease, no grease. Still hmm for me.
OK, 2016 S Harper's Ferry quarters... 1,035,840 business strikes - not intended for circulation, but rolls sold to collectors and issued in mint (not proof) sets... 701,203 proof clads made for proof sets... 515,205 proof silver made for silver proof sets. Now, you can tell the silver from the others because you won't see copper on the edge. If you see copper, it could still be a proof, but the easiest way to tell is that the edge will be very much squared off (90 degree angles) while the business strikes have beveled or chamfered edges. Still a nice coin and if you are concerned that you put a fingerprint on it that will damage it in the future, pure acetone (not fingernail polish remover) will clean off the oils. Soap and water may leave a residue that could dull it in the future unless you have THOROUGHLY rinsed it (even a distilled water rinse would be good). Sometimes coins just jump out at you and I think we all tend to keep the really pretty ones. BTW, get a
