It is graded as a proof, but it's NNC, not the greatest TPG. But I cant even tell if it is a matte proof, plus there's no way its a 65 with that crap on the obv. http://cgi.ebay.com/1913-Lincoln-Ce...Individual?hash=item19ba25f4ed#ht_4463wt_1155
Rim look proofish to me. I purchased 5 NNC's on the cheap from an ebay auction just to get a taste of how they grade cents. Was thinking of making a thread out of it, with pics of each of the 5 and a 'guess the grade' theme..... very happy I did not, because what I saw would have solicited some very colorful descriptors,, and I just got pinged for a Coin Talk 1pt infraction for what I'd consider much more benign language <lesson learned there>. Upshot of NNC cent grades IMO - 5 to 8 pts high - no such thing a questionable color - and judging from this one, no such thing as corroded.
It may be but it does not matter - a Lincoln with that kind of spot perfectly centered is the prime area would be worth almost nothing to anyone I know - proof or not all anyones ever goin to see "is that spot"!
indeed the spot commands THE prime focal area. Surprised the bidding is this high, I wonder though, could NCS conserve it?
I suspect it is not a proof. The inner vertical of the rim should be very perpendicular as well as the outside ( which can't be seen), and the photos seem to show a slope at the bottom. The devices are sharp, but less ( especially lettering on reverse) than I would expect. And the coloring looks off, maybe already recolored. All impossible to tell from a photo , and with real proofs, very difficult to authenticate even in hand, IMO. It's a long shot. You can be certain if the seller thought it was, it wouldn't still be in the NNC holder. Jim
If you are buying the coin and not the holder, it really doesn't matter if it is a proof or not. The eye appeal is nothing in my opinion. It is uncirculated, and that's about it.
My guess is that it is probably proof, but cleaned and recolored (and I do not mean naturally). My experience with NNC is that they would give SGS a run for their money as the poorest. Worth nothing? Obviously wrong since there are at least 4 people who have put their money where there mouth is and bid at least $50. Again, my guess is that there are a lot more out thee who would bid that much for it.
Sheez ebay and their crazy buyers. They charge alot of fees but it looks as though you can make up for them with bidders like that...
