hello guys.i just got this 1965 nickel and it has the shiniest finish i have ever seen.it is uncirculated but the detail is very very pronounced and its finish is like shiny silver.also it doesnot have desiners initials at the bottom of his shirt not sure if its supposed to this year.and one side is normal thickness and the other is a lot thicker and it has a perfect sharp chamfered edge around the top outer ridge. 1862csa1.jpg

It may be SMS nickel and the designers F.G. was not added till 1966.

I agree the 65 is a SMS and was most likely struck at Denver or West Point

As the US mint was moving the Proof production to San Francisco the was no mint marked used from 1965-1967

I believe there isn't a mint mark for 65-67, because the gov was worried about people pulling silver coinage out of circulation. They realize people collect coins by mint mark, so by not putting mint marks on those years, it meant less coins pulled from circulation by collectors.

Also, you can't compare a 1960's or 1970's coin to present day coinage mint quality. As you can see in the photo, recent coinage really sucks in the striking details. If you look at the new design of the nickle, the image is almost completely flat. I think this is on purpose so that they can spit out more crappy coinage faster with weaker strikes.
