    sue the ...'s.

As far as "injury" all it takes is one person who bought any of the 2009 satin coins or any 2010 Lincoln cent from HSN to show damage (especially after he/she tries to see it to a local dealer). Class action lawyers do it all the time.
Any CT members who are lawyers willing to try some greenmail :D?

More to the point, if the FTC started getting complaint letters :loud: (with copies to Ken Moy and your local congressman/woman), eventually somone might be forced to take action.

damage, not poor judgment. You have to show that they hurt you financially by manipulating the market with their actions. I think that is going to be an impossible burden.

Man i thought I was the only one that talked about that. My friends laugh at that stuff especially the weight loss. If you saw the building i work in you would understand.

Word is that a local credit card scammer burned them through a couple million.
Apparently used fake info to setup credit cards and maxed them out on HSN coins and franklin mint coins. when the credit card comapnies figured out they were fake they deffered payment.
That SOB now has a ton of useless crap coins. I wonder what he will do with them...

The coins that they sell are not necessarily worthless. They are good coins and I would buy them if they were selling for a fair price but unfortunately they aren't.

Since the credit card fraud got the coins for next to nothing I think he got a good deal as opposed to some very naive customers that pay twice what the mint is selling a coin or collection for.

HSN has failed to mention why the satin finish coins are done. They didn't sell as the mint has anticipated. Now when GM quit making Oldsmobiles a few years ago, the value of my Eighty-eight didn't skyrocket. These HSN idiots are preying on people's ignorance and stupidity, and it is perfectly legal. Arm yourself with knowledge and research before you purchase anything tagged as an "investment."

The comments HSN makes that are reported here are not false statements of fact regarding the product they are selling. Most of what they do is "puffing" ("my product is great, you really need it" or "the Chevy I am selling is better than the Ford you think you want to buy") and is not significantly different from most other advertising. But they have not lied about the product itself they only claim that the value of the product is greater than what they are selling it for because of what might happen. This might push the line in a few states with strong consumer protection laws but not in most states and likely not under federal law.

It's gonna take a lot to happen for the gold plated state quarters to gain any value... let alone more then the outrageous price they paid for them in the first place.

As with any source of commerce for coins, Caveat Emptor!
C'mon people... If you are reading this Message Board and have a passing interest in collecting coins, you should know that you must educate yourself, read the books and ask for advice!
Now I know I am preaching to the choir; however, what really burns my butt is that there are a lot of consumers buying coins from these TV hucksters who eventually find out the hard way that they over paid and/or bought a common coin product with very little chance of future investment growth or numismatic worth!
And when that happens these people leave the hobby; they dump the product on the market in a desperate attempt to recoup a loss! They are left with a bad taste in their mouth concerning coin collectors, vendors and hobbyists.
And the hucksters take the money and wait for the next "hot collectible" item to surface. (I offer that based on my actual experience in the football card collecting arena.)
My advice to those who ask me:
Find a trusted dealer, buy one or two low priced items and evaluate, grade and consider the entire transaction a learning experience. Develop a trust and understand that this is a business transaction for both of you!
Rant is over . . .:hammer:
    just my p.o.v.

It's funny, I was watching yesterday ( I DVR all the coin shows) and they were hawking the gold state quarter set and Mezack pulled a circulated (rather ugly, too) Missouri quarter from his pocket and held it next to the gold plated Missouri quarter. As he's talking about the gold ones, he says (and I am paraphrasing) "You can't get coins of this quality from circulation. The ones you will get will all look like this!" and shows the ugly Missouri, which I am sure is probably the most beat up and ugly one he could find.

as he said this, my first thought, almost a knee-jerk reaction was...

I'd rather have the ugly one!

LOL, just thought you'd appreciate the story!

I agree. People need to learn before they buy. ANYTHING!

Two things, as far as the investors, I hope they all leave! The sooner the better! They are ruining my hobby. (<------------<<<<< editorial comment)

Oh, and when they dump their product onto the market at a loss, the more collectible stuff will sell at a closer to reality market price and that to me is just fine. I am willing to pay realistic prices for coins. The junk, they can just dump that anyway, it was never worth buying IMHO. As for the bad taste in their mouths, we can't do anything about that. It was their mistake not ours. If you eat a spoonful of crap from my back yard, don't get mad at me for the way it tastes.

    sound advice!

HSN does have some good coins. I saw intire mint set runs and proof set runs...ectd
Sure they have poo on a stick too like gold plated waffers but not all are bad.
The real problem is their over hype and over charging. Everyone trys to get what they can for their goods but wow these guys are good at it. I've read it before that they are like P T Barnum and I believe it.

    Duke:

Each item they sell is genuine and exactly what they describe them to be, but all are overpriced. They have no good deals or buys. Everything can be found for substantially less and if you can't find something ask here, someone will help ya find it for a bunch less!

    Watching Coin Collector right now.

The MS70 $5 2010 Olympic Maple Leaf FIRST DAY OF ISSUE comes with RED OAK PRESENTATION BOX and the MS69 comes with crappy black metal one? What gives? lol

    Just overpriced junk...

I'm waiting for them to go on about how rare the state quarters are, and that the value went up when they plated them in that 24K gold.

    Blah, Blah, Blah...

But for some reason, I cannot remove my eyes from the TV lol

HSN is not an expert at coins, grading,or much of anything else except shady advertizing that gets by just under the legal wire. My question is, why would anyone buy coins from them in the first place? There are way too many people doing what they do. A few are Heartland America, Sportsmans Guide, American Mint and soooo many others. Stay with trusted names, members of the ANA,etc.

Kind of like watching a car accident. You know the results are going to be bad, but you just can't turn away.

I just posted this on another thread and tought I might as well here too. They are unloading the Disabled Veteran proof coin for $149.00. How do you think you would feel after buying that when you found that the Mint was selling them for less than $40.00

I couldn't resist rewriting that it seems that the Otter and Flounder act has been split up, at least for this show. The sweater wearing Flounder is being subbed for by this nutty blonde haired woman. She seems very nice but she is driving Otter crazy. I think he desperately misses Flounder.

  20. Another crazy part of this story is that HSN has those commemorative coins graded and for sale in just 2 days after they were released. They must have some special arrangement with the US Mint. Doesn't seem fair. TC

Tell me about it! Maybe they hire US mint employees for a couple hours a day to get special favors, who knows. I've smelt a rat for a long, long time!! They're all in cahoots, I mean the auction conspirators like HSN, CoinVault, CSN etc. It's like a legalized mafia, ripping off grandma's and ignorant shoppers. It's disgraceful!! :eek:hya:
