You are correct that the 80-S and 81-S are often graded on a curve. But take another look at the date on this one. ;)

Just wondering, did anyone else think this was an 1880-S and not an 1890-S?

Most folks don't realize Lady Liberty was a rough and tumble gal. And rumor has it she sat for this image the morning after a nasty bar fight. Looks like she took a few but you shoulda seen the other gal. I think I see a little doubling on the ear lobe, not sure. But I'd give the obverse a 64. On the reverse I see a little chatter below the ED in united and something going on with the viewers left wing around the top of the olive leaves. Not sure what this is, looks like a hit? maybe a bag mark. And some splotchy stuff under the arrow tips and above the right star. But I believe the toning trumps the obverse nicks and the reverse issues aren't that discernable. But I'd go 64 on the reverse too. Would love to have it in my collection.

I am at a technical 63, The color probably helped it get a grade bump.

    64+

I have to say 65-65+ contact marks on the cheek and under chin just a bit too much for gem...

    65-65+ is gem grade.

    Reveal time:

Unc Details cleaned...I've examined it and don't see any hairlines or obvious signs of cleaning. I would have thought a less obvious cleaning with such color would at worst be net graded. I see it as a 63/64.

I've always considered gem to start at 66-67 and superb gem 68-69 but redbook agrees with you... then again it also states it is "unofficial" so I'll stick with my opinion that gem starts at 66 lol

    (from redbook)

Commonly Used (but unofficial) Adjectival Grades
    Adjectival Grade Equivalent Numerical Grade
    Uncirculated MS-60, MS-61, MS-62[β]
    Select or Choice Uncirculated MS-63
    Choice Uncirculated MS-63, MS-64
    Gem Uncirculated MS-65, MS-66
    Superb Gem Uncirculated MS-67, MS-68, MS-69
    Perfect Uncirculated MS-70

damn you got us on that one... I don't see cleaned, not a single sign of it, and had it been another poster I might have considered it AT but I seem to recall that you don't care for fake toners :D

You can, but it isn’t accurate. BU is considered MS 63, and Gem is 65.

I see no obvious signs of cleaning. As I said, I have seen that coin before, and it was in a older holder. With that toning, I would crack it out,and send it to NGC. Totally crazy. It has bagmarks on the obverse, and a nice reverse.

The color is natural (market acceptable); I've picked up a few AT coins over the years out of curiosity or because they looked cool to me (even knowing they were AT) but those were all inexpensive (and most I later ended up selling off).

If you remember where, I'd love to see a photo. I tried searching Heritage archives but did not see anything there.

I bought it in the details holder since I really like the color and I am happy to own it regardless of the grade. Still my plan is to try regrading it at some point as a straight grade holder would look nicer. NGC is super slow right now and PCGS is just a little quicker. I'll make a coin later (I currently have some coins at PCGS, so those results might influence me a bit).

I saw it at Legends a decade ago. It was at a Vegas auction. I don’t remember which auction—I was there a few times in 2010, and 2011. Unfortunately, I don’t remember the grade, but it was in a PCGS straight graded holder. It was either 63, or 64. I can’t remember which generation it was. The coin is definitely NT, and I cannot see any reason why it would not straight grade. It is not cleaned, just baggy. I would guess it would straight grade as a 63, with a bump for color.
