These folks really do know better . . .

Despite being obvious to the viewer, there is no way the re-engraving of this coin does not beg to be mentioned in text form.

i can see the re-engraving, but if i bought it from someone whose photos didn't clearly show it, and it wasn't disclosed in the listing, I'd be pretty salty about it.

Some do not appreciate the history I guess. All about their pockets maybe.

Can someone circle the problem areas for those of us less knowledgeable please?

The mint mark looks like an RPM.

I'm looking at the reverse shield.

I'd like to think I'd see whatever's there if I had the coin in-hand, but I don't collect the series, so I may be missing other obvious rework.

It’s important to help those who don't yet know what to look for.

And the foregoing underscores my point.

I just meant that when I thought someone stated it was tampered with, I meant people out in the public have bad intentions. Did not mean towards anyone of you. So sorry!

A considerable portion of the central reverse design has been completely re-engraved . . . all of the shield, and much of the adjacent feather detail.

ARe there tell tale signs? e.g. when harshly cleaned there would be the micro lines in same direction. Or no luster cartwheel. Or is it just a case of you have to be very very well read on the series?

Ugh, with buyer's premium and shipping, someone paid about $950 for a coin worth so much less.

The most obvious to me, without enlarging the photos, was the tooling on the eagles feathers. Pretty obvious and I'm not familiar with the series, but there it is.

So is the telltale sign that it is much lighter in the center reverse compared to the rest of the coin?

No, the coin doctor did a poor job of retoning the tooled area. A better job of retoning the coin might not tip you off as easily, but the re-engraving of the coin should.

Ok, I guess I just don't know series well enough to spot the differences in the shield and feathers. I will need to investigate more.

A little less worn, but compare to this unaltered reverse

Another example of my belief that unless you’re very good, like @ToughCOINS , you take your life out of your own hands when you buy raw.
