IRON PATCH from treasurenet gave me the link here :smile I found this in a bunch of stuff my brother gave me, I belive That there was a contest from a cereal manufacturer years ago that there was a rare coin in one of the boxes. Does anyone remember this??? leave it or should i just open it to see DONT SEE ANY MINT MARK
I think from a collector's standpoint, it would be wise to leave it in its original packaging. But, that's just my opinion.
What makes you think that this coin came from a contest or cereal box? Is it heat sealed in an unopened plastic holder of some sort? Does it look circulated (worn, scratched, nicked or discolored? It's not a Cheerios $ or cent. I'd wait for more info from other CoinTalkers before opening it. A better photo would help some. Bruce
What he said What Noose said. I think you should be able to flip it and at least get a date. It could be worth 25 cents.....or a cause for frustration unless you do SOMETHING to it.
I remember getting a nickel in a box of cereal, but that was a very long time ago. I wanna say 1999, but it may have been before that. It was before the Cheerios cent/dollar promotion; I know that much.
STOP! Do not open it until you know what you have. It definitely looks packed in such the manner as cereal box promotional items are sealed. You need to identify which promotion and product this was for and if there are collectors of such an item both coin/numismatic collectors and advertising/cereal/promo item collectors. ALSO, we will need better pics to see what you have. What's the date? An '88? Check this thread: 1988 Nickel
Its a little difficult to tell for sure, but the nickel Chug has seems to be pachaged differently than the ones in mjames91966's post. So I would think they are from different promotions.
