I think from a collector's standpoint, it would be wise to leave it in its original packaging. But, that's just my opinion.

    Open it.

The only cereal promotion I remember is the 2000 Cheerios Sacagawea/Lincoln promotion.

What makes you think that this coin came from a contest or cereal box? Is it heat sealed in an unopened plastic holder of some sort? Does it look circulated (worn, scratched, nicked or discolored?

    It's not a Cheerios $ or cent.

I'd wait for more info from other CoinTalkers before opening it.

A better photo would help some.

I would not open it, but it does look like there is enough room in the plastic to turn it over.

I think you should be able to flip it and at least get a date.
It could be worth 25 cents.....or a cause for frustration unless you do SOMETHING to it.:p

I remember getting a nickel in a box of cereal, but that was a very long time ago. I wanna say 1999, but it may have been before that. It was before the Cheerios cent/dollar promotion; I know that much.

STOP! Do not open it until you know what you have.

It definitely looks packed in such the manner as cereal box promotional items are sealed. You need to identify which promotion and product this was for and if there are collectors of such an item both coin/numismatic collectors and advertising/cereal/promo item collectors.

ALSO, we will need better pics to see what you have.

What's the date? An '88? Check this thread: 1988 Nickel

I agree with that. Never open a numismatic item until you know exactly what you have.

I have a couple of the Cheerios Lincolns, are they really worth anything?

Its a little difficult to tell for sure, but the nickel Chug has seems to be pachaged differently than the ones in mjames91966's post. So I would think they are from different promotions.
