Going through some of my many boxes of stuff I ran across this 1853 large cent . Not being a strong suit of mine I notice this in the date and curls . MPD , die chip, can someone do an attbution ? Thanks in advance.
I believe it is a mpd I have no reference that supports that....reference texts are very expensive books for the ones that one would want. However a die chip isnt out of the question, unfortunately its damaged. It has a lot of details.
It appears to be N-15 according to my The Die Varieties of United States Large Cents 1840 - 1857, John R. Grellman, Jr., 2021 edition. Quoting: "Heavy, curved line (top of a misplaced 5) at left top of 5 connecting it to the curl above." The N-15 is the only variety listed for 1853 with anything even remotely like your coin. BTW, it's an R-2
It looks like someone a long time ago started to punch a hole thru the coin with a square nail and stopped.
I have zero experience with this series, but have to agree with Sal on this one. Appears someone made, or was making, a hole and either quit, or filled it in. Just an observation based on the photos provided.
Believe it or not large cents were cheaper than a washer! Thus a square nail hole isn't a surprise. You needed a washer didn't had one time to make 1
