I support your decision. It is always wise to have the coin examined in person. Regardless of the opinion received, send the piece to get encapsulated. It is a great teaching tool and not a waste of money. As I recall, there is a TPG representative member here that offers a very economical and fair cost.

While the photo is a little blurry, I can see the raised mark connecting two strands of hair, Obverse Die 1.
Note the 8 and 9.

 

Think there's some all-too-vivid and all-too-often knee-jerk imaginations with this sort of stuff, to be honest (and respectful). But everyone has their opinions no matter how they arrive at them...and all things considered of how/where this came from, mine is: no mint-mark (not removed, etc) plus nothing with the "8" other than condition/residue issues effecting everything...even adding things that aren't there......!

 

That's a nice circulated coin. I'm in Northeastern, PA and over the years I have bought over 24, 1928 Peace dollars. 12 for my circulated sets and 12 extras ( 5 are used to show the different die gouges for the VAM 1 at coin club meetings). Your 8 doesn't arouse any suspicions for me. I don't see a removed mintmark ( I have two removed mint marks for educational purposes). It's best to have this coin in hand to authenticate it. What does it weight (26.73 grams +- due to wear), does it stick to a magnet, diameter correct? I would do an XRF to determine silver content although I don't think it's counterfeit. I've looked at your coin and checked all the VAM varieties and without it being in hand, it's hard to determine what VAM variety you have but it is not the one with the doubled R or Doubled Tiera rays ( I enlarged your pictures). I would send it to ICG and have them determine its authenticity and if not encapsulate it For Educational Purposes Only. Have you gone to VamWorld to check the die characteristics?

LCS was of the opinion that it is in fact a legit coin. I'm gonna send it in once I have a few more coins to send with it. I've got an 1836 half and a couple of higher mint state buffalos I wanted to grade. Just a few more to keep the cost per slab in the < $30 range. I'll post the slab once it's back.

 

My mom listened to Paul Harvey everyday. I doubt anyone younger than me would get the reference...

 

I sure did, but I doubt very much that I'm younger than you. (This was on the kitchen radio in the 1960s...)

He was on the radio in the middle 70s because my father-in-law listened to him.

 

When I was in college in the mid-70's I worked summers as an engineer's aide for Ohio Dept of Transportation. The 60-something engineer I worked for always took a coffee break at 10 am to listen to "the rest of the story". Good memories.

 

I thought I remembered when The Rest of the Story first started running as a standalone product, and apparently I was right -- but I didn't realize how long it ran. The Paul Harvey Unofficial Archives site says it ran from May 1976 until Harvey Sr's death in 2009.

 

The 8 looks like a doctored 3 to me.

 

I agree, the 8 looks suspicious. The top loop is too large. I'm guessing an altered 1923. JMHO

 

It does not look legitimate to me. Looks like an altered 8. It is a 1923 Philadelphia mint coin,which is s common date. Whoever did the alteration is pretty skillful.

 

I didn't see this thread the first time around, I guess. The known authentic 1928 die pairs are well-documented on VAMWorld. The mess in the mint mark area looks suspicious. The 8 doesn't worry me as much, since it's far easier to remove a tiny S than to chase metal and make a 3 into an 8. Look for doubling on TRVST. There are several 28-Ss with doubling here, but no 28-Ps.

 

Pretty sure it's legit...not a 23 at least. Just submit it and let the TPG "experts" decide, authenticate, etc...they're going to, anyway (if/when submitted), if likely something of "details"
