The Seated Dimes are love tokens. There’s an 1854 with “LM” (my username initials), and an 1876 with “RS” ( my real-life initials). The latter was a perfectly selected gift from my CoinTalk Secret Santa several years back. His or her identity remains unknown to me, but if you see this, Santa- thanks. See, I kept it!
The quality of my holeys is not presently up to the old standards, but this is a very casual sideline project now, done on the cheap, purely for fun.
Ancients enthusiasts: this was the centerpiece of the Holey Gold Hat in its bygone glory days. Zeno (emperor of the East, A.D. 476-491). AV Solidus. Thessalonica, A.D. 476 or later. Pedigreed to the famous Louis E. Eliasberg Collection. RIC 941. Metcalf 223. Choice VF. 4.27 grams, 20.40 mm. Obv Helmeted, cuirassed bust three-quarters facing of Zeno, holding spear and decorated shield. Rev Victory standing l., holding long cross, two stars in field. A scarcer issue. Scratched in right obverse field and holed, otherwise Choice VF. It must have been a “junkbox” item for the likes of Mr. Eliasberg. LOL
first thing I found on him was his family in the 1900 census, still living in Mecca. His wife is listed as Dora L, and this says they married in 1880. (sometimes, this date is not accurate on census records.) I was not able to find the marriage record in Ohio, or adjacent states Here is a 1910 census, once again in Trumbull county. It looks like he died July 23, 1911 in Warren, Trumbull county, Ohio. I am in the Airport in Manchester waiting for my flight to Newark, then Orlando for a conference. So if you want more info, remind me later
Thanks! I want an old photo of him! Yeah, I know, that’s a tall order. But it’s happened three times before in my past quests for these love token names. I thought this Clarence E. Lake piece was interesting for a number of reasons. The fact it gave a name, location, and partial birthdate was impressive. Then there’s the large Canadian host coin. Finally, the curious incuse style; perhaps done with punches rather than engraved. I’ve never seen another like it.
@lordmarcovan OK, so the "Holey Hat" is back, is the "Holey Vest" gonna be resurrected too ? Seems to me I first saw the Hat sometime in 2002 or thereabouts, but definitely before CT ever existed, the Vest just a bit later. And I can't recall for sure if it was on the NGC forum or the PCGS forum where I first saw it, coulda even been both about the same time.
There are presently no plans to resurrect the vest, though such an event is theoretically still possible. I still have it in a garment bag in the closet, empty of coins.
A great way to honor your mother at the same time. You're a good boy Charlie Brown, oops sorry! Have fun, thanks for sharing.
