The reverse is very messed up with a lot of green junk over most of it. The Obverse is very unusual....It seems...To me anyways, that there are letters ect all over where they should not be....Take a look at the pictures.....What do you think?
I agree, Zinc Rot. From somewhere off in the Coin Twilight Zone... Zinc Deterioration On Copper Plated Lincoln Cents (error-ref.com)
That's a tough cent right there. Any likeness to lettering is coincidental. If you feel like experimenting on it, you could rub some catsup on it to remove the hydrozincite and have a look at what you thought were letters.
I see in your profile you're in AL. Up here in snow country NYS- this time of year the roads are all white with salt. These poor pennies don't like the salt and usually turn the way yours is. I even found one today with zinc rot on it. Most likely yours was outside but still spendable. Zinc rot is almost a given outside in the winter. Snowman
I know exactly what you are saying Snowman....I was born in Brooklyn N.Y. and ended up moving to Connecticut...I have seen more snow that most New England-ers ! For 15 years I worked for the street dept in Shelton Ct. and I don't know how many days n nights I worked plowing snow....One time we had a really bad snowstorm and not only did I plow snow I also was an equipment operator. It was around midnight and the foreman called my on the radio and told me to drive down to the main "lot" and park the truck then crank up the Big Bucket Loader and take it downtown to help the truck drivers open up the streets. So that's what I did.....After cleaning up most of downtown, I started cleaning the side roads....Then I couldn't clean off a man hole cover on this one road....There was a lump in the middle of the road where the man hole cover was and I couldn't clean it off....So I backed up....Put the front end loader in drive....and hammered the throttle down to the floor and I lowered the front bucket to the road.....Then... BAMMM!!...The machine ended up stalling and I ended up busting through the flat windshield with my head....Wooowww.....And OOOWWWW....Found out later that the manhole cover had been been loosened and was wobbling when someone drove over it so a crew took it off, cleaned it all up, and re-cemented it back on...It had not been asphalted because the plants were closed for the winter so they put some temporary sealant around it that really doesn't work too good....Ahhh...The Good Ol days!!
I found a 1998 WAM with barnacles and after soaking it in DI water for a week, nothing was making them budge. I think that I tried the 50/50 dilution of white vinegar with hydrogen peroxide and watched it closely for a few minutes. The barnacles lifted and I was able to conserve it the best I could. I wish I took before and after photos, but I really had low expectations about the outcome. You can see the 'acne' on the coin, but it looked encrusted like your cent. At least it's recognizable again. I used to work in Seymour at the top of Silvermine Industrial. Just high enough to get the better snow during the winter storms. Where I live on the shore, we get our fair share, but we also get the sloppy winter mixes. Mostly annoying when that happens. Hard to shovel or snow blow. One heck of a workout.
@SmokinJoe …The Mint does not make special dies to add extra letters. The first thing you should have thought was this was a corroded Zincoln and stopped right there, proceeding directly to a trash can and throwing it away.
