And the answer is MS 66+ ....plus for the color I'm guessing....and I'd say anything in the 65-66+ range would be a fair enough grade
Got it! I thought, as I said they could go as low as 65, because of the poor strike, and die artifacts on the reverse. However, they took my advice, and went 66+. The color is really premium, and gives it tons of eye appeal. lol-like PCGS listens to me?
Here's an AU55 with stronger details and fewer marks. Leo Jefferson Nickel Collection for sale. — Collectors Universe
No, it does NOT have cleaner surfaces. The hair shows strong rub. Jefferson’s coat shows rub. The entire Monticello building shows rub and softness all over. If you think this coin shows better surfaces than the OP coin, please have your eyeglass prescription checked. The coin you posted shows clear circulation wear. I think AU 55 was generous. I would have graded it AU 50-53. Sheesh!
Here are a couple of AU58s where the wear is quite apparent. The AU55 38-D suffered from a long storage in a cardboard album as a great amount of paper burn is quite evident. If you had the coin in hand, you would be able to see more hair details, sharper window and digit details and end steps. And more steps under the heavy paper burn. Yes, I truly believe the coin is a mint state piece but the heavy toning hides this and the coin was severely undergraded. Regardless, a beautiful coin, reason why I purchased it. And no, I have no plans having it regraded. Makes for a better show piece in its present holder. And you can never judge a coin from the one angle out of the many ways a coin can be seen in hand. Thank you for your input. Leo
You need to learn, if you are going to be a serious collector. The coin you posted is obviously circulated. Just because you think it isn’t circulated does not make it so. i have circled the areas where there is extremely obvious circulation wear. It is not light, AU 58 wear, either. It is obvious contact wear, not storage condition wear. Is it an attractive coin? Yes. The toning makes it a pretty coin. However, without the toning, the coin would be an obviously circulated ordinary one. PCGS got it right—you did not.
You need to take a moment and learn who you are speaking to. While @leothelion opinion from yours regarding these two nickels from photos are obviously different; it’s still from an expert in the series opinion and that while you can disagree with should not be disrespected. @Morgandude11 if you want to learn a bit I encourage you to view the entire series collection and write ups on each coin in @leothelion collection. Saying it is impressive and one of the best would be an understatement.
I am not arguing about it. Attractive coin for sure. Circulated coin, for sure. I have no idea who he is.
I am publicly apologizing to both you,@kSigSteve, and @leothelion. When I saw only 50 posts, and “junior member,” I thought it was some newbie kid, who was claiming that he had an under graded certified nickel. We get those threads like that, constantly, and new members just vindicating their own opinions. I did not realize he was an expert in Jefferson nickels, and a recognized authority in the field. I apologize, and defer to his expertise. Mea Culpa Sincerely, Dave
