Good evening! I've been saving some nicer Jefferson Nickels for a future TPG bulk submission. Every once in a while, I go through the tube and pare it down (eliminating coins I don't think are worthy of spending money to have graded.) The way I see it, if my experience and knowledge increases over time (hopefully) then eventually I'll have a pretty nice group of coins that actually deserve to be slabbed. Here are five coins from that tube - some I feel could still warrant a slab (at bulk prices, that is) and a couple I think probably wouldn't do well if submitted. Enjoy! 1938 D This one has lovely color, but unfortunately someone with poor coin handling etiquette left their fingerprints on it. I'm on the fence about this one. At the very least, I'll save it for myself. 1940 D This one has some unusually strong color on the obverse, as well as full steps (which is common on 1940 D's) but the spots on the reverse make me believe it would be Detailed if submitted, either for AT or ED. 1949 S Just my luck, find a prooflike 1949 S and it has major issues in the fields (reminds me of the PL 1976 D Kennedy I found last year.) At the very least, I'm keeping it for myself...might just submit it and see how they treat the breaks in the luster on the surfaces. 1950 D I already have a couple keeper 1950 D's, but this one has gorgeous color, booming luster, and full steps. I'd definitely submit it and hope for a star. 1956 P The luster and color are really, really superb in hand - so I think I may submit it to go for the 64/65 star. I've had pretty bad luck getting stars, though, so it might be a waste of money. Of course, at bulk rates, it's not that much of a gamble, which is why I save these up until I have enough of them. EDIT: I just wanted to also add a coin from this tube that I decided against keeping, and when you see the images, you'll understand why. The obverse...just gorgeous. Easily a 66, possibly a 67. Lovely color, especially for a non-silver example. The reverse...ugh. Maybe an AU55? 1947 P
I'd agree with submitting the 50-D and 56; those two have the nicest overall eye appeal. The others all have some positive attributes but the negatives you mentioned are all obvious and thus make grading (most likely) not worth the cost. The 1947 is a great example for bringing back two sided grading like in the Anacs photo cert days. It would be cool seeing a 66/55 split grade. As it stands, I'm guessing the wear would have the TPGs net it as a 58 (unless they were more kind and gave it a 62 or 63).
I was just thinking, it's been a REALLY long time since I bulk submitted anything. Prices could be vastly different with everything that's been going on. Anyone done a bulk submission at PCGS/NGC lately and want to share what prices were? (I doubt anyone will, but why not ask.)
I've never been a bulk submitter, so I don't know. Hopefully someone chimes in that knows. I did see someone post that NGC added a $200 (?) membership fee for dealer/bulk memberships.
