I was looking on Ebay to find a cent for the collection and came across this one. Graded by ANACS. Pictures were not great, but it was well in my price range, seemed to have good luster and brown, so I pulled the trigger and bought it. When it arrived I was shocked to see it was a toner. Those who know me know I am not a fan of toning in the least. Either paranoia or ignorance, I just find them a lot more difficult and distracting to grade. Still, this Papa Smurf is growing on me and I guess it is nice to have one representative toner in the set. I'll reveal the grade Sunday night. Thanks! Here is a slightly more oblique view of the obverse. I just didn't feel like I gleaned all the details on the straight on shot.
I went 62, I am suprized that ANACS gave it the approval. That blue is usually associated with a coin cleaner.
Finding any coin that old, in that condition, always amazes me. It is too dark (the photo) for me to venture a guess, but I like it.
MS 62....a few too many hits on the obverse to go higher in my opinion; I like the overall look and if the luster is good, you have yourself a nice cent!
@dimeguy what did the eBay photos look like? Can you post those? It would be interesting to see those (especially since you mentioned it did not appear toned in those photos).
I have a Chromebook and cannot find a way to just copy his image. I'm am hesitant to post a link as I don't like those trolls saying, "You paid that for the coin!?" Still, since you asked I will post the link to the closed auction. I think you can see traces of blue, but not as much as compared to my lighting but I feel it is the same coin. Furthermore, I am fully aware I am not, nor pretend to be, a professional photographer and maybe it would look more like his pictures under different lighting. I am just trying to convey in my pictures what I see in the coin. https://www.ebay.com/itm/393920409056
I downloaded them and am posting for you @dimeguy ...I think you paid a fair price. And I'd say this qualifies for a better than expected result on eBay (we had a thread here on CoinTalk called "I gambled on eBay and I liked it" where this would fit well). https://www.cointalk.com/threads/i-gambled-on-ebay-and-i-liked-it.222155/
