I ran across this Lincoln I bought years ago, threw it in a flip, What would you do to conserve this coin? Yes, the obverse has a very PL surface, with a reverse that looks like BS strike. Either way, Please give your opinion below. Edit
put in circulation, I just looked at eBay and you can buy a complete set for $6.99 shipped. not worth the time or effort to conserve. https://www.ebay.com/itm/234382554603?hash=item369249f5eb:g:I4sAAOSwxPJh5vEB
You know sometimes no matter how a coin starts out...and ends are unbelievable. I had a beautiful 1936 s/s buffalo ,had it graded , put it away, revisted it only to discover carbon spots. Not just 1 or two. The coins a 65 nicely toned specimen was trashed. One never knows just how a piece of medal will store, or if it will begin to spot from carbon.
This. Edited to add: I did vote for "try a soak", if you're so inclined. Might as well treat it as an experiment. If you save it, bravo! If that fails, you've still got one cent to spend, right? Could be educational.
not worth the effort and cost to soak. spend it, let some kid find it and add it to his/her collection.
Hey, if there are any conservation techniques you ever wanted to try on a proof, but were afraid you'd ruin the coin -- well, here's your experimental subject, pre-ruined for your convenience and peace of mind!
Looks like an impaired proof to me. Not worth the cost of conserving, if that were even possible. I don’t believe any thing will bring back it’s original good looks.
I like all the answers, this one is beyond repair. But might get a shot of MS70 before it gets tossed.
Heres the updated pics after a treatment of MS70. The MS70 immediately turned the reds Purple and the rest a darker blue. The verdigris spots are still there, And more of a natural look, BN.
Wow, what a difference! In your first photo, it looked like there was corrosion covering half the obverse, and it looked like a pit under the G -- in the after shots, that stuff is nearly invisible. Yeah, the blue is unnatural, but I'm still going to call it an improvement overall.
There was plenty of corrosion, it had stuff all over the obv. I am suprised it cleaned up as well as it did. It still may get another treatment of MS70 followed by hot water rinse and a distilled water soak, but nothing is going to remove the verdigris, besides Verdicare and I haven't been able to get a bottle yet.
I'm sometimes amazed at how well distilled water works. I usually start there and get progressively harsher with solvents and brushing. But only as a last-ditch effort to conserve a coin.
