Hey fellow world coin enthusiasts, I've started my journey of collecting a set of at least 1 coin from every issuing Country and/or Territory for my birth year of 1981. @Chris B was so kind as to help me jump start my endeavor and even increase my enthusiasm a bit. That being said, I wondered if anyone knows, or has a hunch, what countries will be difficult to find (especially at a reasonable price). The reason I ask is because I'd like to setup some saved searches so I get alerted if something pops up. I've done this with my shot glass collection and it's paid dividends for a couple of my harder to find glasses. I've already got my album setup with 2X2 pocket coin sheets in it, enough for (iirc) 138 coins. I also made my own checklist so I can keep track. The coins will be arranged in the album in alphabetical order, 1 coin of each country/territory. Additional coins from a particular country will live elsewhere. Already having fun with this collection. Thanks in advance for any input!!
Its way easier for 1981.....then lets say 1781/1681/1581 Here is one of mine from 1781 Tuscano AV 3 Zecchini 1781 Firenze Mint Pietro Leopoldo Duke of Tuscany/ later would be crowned HRE in 1790 following death of Josef II.
Thanks! Yeah, it gets really hard once you get to 1500. Early dated Christian coins are super rare in 1400s/ 1300s. AH dated ones are easier to obtain/ 700-1500AD.
Since you are only looking for one coin from each of the countries, I'd suggest that you use 1 1/2 X 1 1/2 holders, which have 30 coins per page instead of 20. It will make the album somewhat thinner. Since most countries all have small denomination coins, they will be also smaller in size. All my Canadian Victoria large cents fit just fine in the holders and there is enough room to write on what you have. A Canadian large cent is larger than a quarter and the same size as a Canadian loonie and everything fits just fine. That's 5 pages instead of 7.
I thought of that, but I already have so many 2x2's and album pages it was easy to go this route....although for some future collection ideas I have that's a good point. I also have a template made up for printing labels that fit on my 2X2's to make them look nice and neat instead of scribbled on with my kindergarten writing.
Probably, the most difficult thing will be to buy coins of Siberia. Their export from Russia is prohibited and is a criminal offense. They appear in Europe and the USA only by smuggling.
