This 1965 Kennedy half appears to have light doubling on the Y only in LIBERTY. I've check the rest of it very close and this is all I could find on the obverse. Is it possible to have a DDO with only one letter showing doubling?
Hi, I agree. You may want to check the hairlines (those little "Alfalfa" sprouts ) under the letters T and Y, they are sometimes doubled a little on coins with slight doubling like this. I have found several 1967 dated pieces that exhibit this doubling. I also think I have one 1965 that is doubled like this too. Have Fun Bill
Since asking about the photo of the Y, I looked at several other halfs I had stored away and so far found about a dozen that look like this one. The stars below UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and those above E PLURIBUS UNUM look like these in this photo with some not quite so pronounced. They are of a few different years. With finding so many like that I guess they must be fairly common? Please disreguard the photo color, I still don't have proper lighting.
Hi, There are many, many, doubled die varieties on Kennedys. On the reverse, it is not unusual to find stars doubled like that. Although still struck from doubled dies, some are relatively common while others are super difficult to find. When I find stars that are doubled like that, I like to take a close look at the word STATES and the Rays that are in the design for signs of splits. Sometimes the stars are the first pick up point and they may lead your eyes to other doubling that is really quite impressive. Have Fun, Bill
Wow, that is an awesome photo, and I can see what you are talking about now (I need to get a new prescription for my eyes), if you don't mind me asking, how did you get such an up close and clear picture?
2b1ask1...I would guess, with out seeing the rest of the half, that the reverse in your photo could be a 64BS DDR-013. Is there a light spread on the outsides of all the letters around the rim, like the M of AMERICA in this attached photo? Is it at least a 64? Larry Nienaber
I took the photos with a 6.31 mp camera. I ran the zoom all the way out and held a 20mm telescope lens to the camera lens. Not easy but all I have. I still have to work out the lighting problem. All of my photos turn out looking like copper coins This picture is of the north east of the M of america on the 1967 Kennedy of the previous photo with the stars split. A few of the letters in AMERICA have this kind of split.
Your DDR looks like it could be a 67 BS DDR-003. Does the notching on the stars between the rays match this photo of a 003...or does it have the marker of, light die scratches north-south on reverse? Larry Nienaber
Looking closer, all the stars circling the eagle, those above E Pluribus Unum, the top of the highest leaf and one of the arrow tips are split. Most a little hard to see but there.
