I was looking through some proof sets I have when I noticed the nickle in the 1995 seems to be a double die. The S is also doubled. The leg on the R is also sharp. I tried to get good pics but had very little luck. Has anyone heard or seen this before. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Im not sure if there is a DD for that issue, but the pics you show dont look doubled to me. A true DD would effect the whole word/MOTO, not just a single letter. Form what i understand, if a single letter looks doubled, its more then likely a Strike Double/Mechanical doubling. I can see what looks like a doubling on the top 'shelf' of the '5', and possibly the bottom leg of the 'R', but to me, neither looks like a true DD....
Sorry for the bad pics I trid again but cant do any better. All of the letters in LIBERTY have at least a minimal amount of doubling as do all 4 digit in the date and the S. Is it rare to find a proof set with doubling weather it is mechanical or a true double die?
Looks like mechanical doubling to me. The points (serrifs) of the letters and numbers are what to look at when hunting for minute DD. These will be split forming 2 seperate points (or more) when you have hub doubling.
From what the error guru's from the forum have told me - over and over and over - is that if the date and mint mark both appear to be doubled, it is a strike/mechanical doubling error.
If it is strike doubling or mechanical doublin of some sort does it increase the value of the set and by how much if so. Thanks again, Ben
strike doubling error coins are way to common, from i have found, to increase the premium of any coin. try this link to see about what others have said .... http://www.cointalk.org/thread10062-definition-error-or-damage.html look at the last post and then look at #2
All proofs are double struck so minor misalignments happen often enough to add no premium to the coins.
To me it looks like a mechanical DD. It happens more often in proof coins do the extra force used to strike the coin. So no, I wouldn’t pay any more for the coin or set. I’m not saying it has no additional value. If you put it on Ebay with those pic’s you might find a buyer.
There is a DD in the 1995 Proof set...I'm not sure about them much but my dad got a set and the dealer had marked it as the dime was a DD....he said that they aren't listed much...but they don't take the price up much either...he said maybe $10-$15 more for the whole set... Speedy
Hi, I can think of instances where on current cents, the date and mintmark are both doubled on a doubled die variety. The easiest one to relate to is the 1995 D DDO Lincoln. Mintmarks are not added to dies the way they used to be and dies now have the mintmark as a part of the design. That makes it very possible for a doubled die to have both a doubled date and mintmark. Have Fun, Bill
Daggerjon, that information about how "if the date and mintmark are both doubled it has to be strike doubling" only holds true for proofs through 1984 and for business strike coins until 1990. After that time the mintmark was a part of the master hub and in the case of a doubled die the date and mintmark WILL nomally show the same doubling.
Its entirely possible i am wrong, i just thought i read on a webpage about errors - in the error section of the forums, the sticky dealing with doubling, the PDF link has a paragraph under a photo that says - Whenever the date and Mint mark are both doubled, odds are that the doubling is strike doubling - So i mistook what was written as an absolute..... There are SOOO many things to look for/at when dealing with errors. Its tough to become knowledgeable with all the 'ins and outs' of that corner of the hobby.
