Great Thread. I collect coins from my heritage: Canadian and Irish. As well as where I have lived in the past: Japan and the U.K. And lastly where I have walked certain pilgrimage routes: Spain and Portugal. Caminho Portugal and Camino de Santiago - Both of which go over 500 kms to Santiago de Compostela.
Current top five in order of number of coins: USA Canada Germany Sweden Great Britain 6 through 10: Denmark Norway Mexico France Australia
Ancient Coins -- primarily Roman Republican, Roman Imperial, Roman Provincial, and, to a lesser extent, various Greek states. That's a lot of different countries right there! I still consider myself a collector of coins and historical/commemorative medals from Great Britain, and England before it, even though I'm not really an active collector anymore. My interest in British coins started with a family trip to the Bahamas when I was 10, and also with knowing that my mother spent most of World War II living in London. With the same caveat of not really being an active collector anymore, German states, particularly Prussia/Brandenburg (where my mother was born and her father's family lived). I always was tempted by the idea of collecting coins from Baden, where my maternal grandmother was from and her family lived for hundreds of years, but have never bought any. France, given that my paternal grandfather was born in Paris, where his parents lived for a good part of the 1880s on their way to the USA from Eastern Europe, and given that I have a lot of ancestors on the Baden side of my mother's family who lived in Alsace, at least as far back as the 1500s. Plus, French is the one foreign language I actually studied and can still kind of read!
German States are my forte/ have over 200 AV coins. I love the ones from Regensburg One could never afford a complete collection/ hundreds of thousands of coins many running over 1M Euros/ esp. the high multiple Dukaten. I have some from Baden-Durlach/ Brandenburg-Prüssen. The HRE/ Swiss Kantons/ Transylvania are gorgeous. My fav. coin is the Michal Apafi 1683 AV 100 Dukaten!
Most interesting to see the interests of the various members -- and the great variety of the responses. As for me: Egypt British West Africa India - especially independent states such as Assam British from Victoria and earlier French African colonies
I don’t focus on any specific countries per se. For me it’s mostly about the coins themselves, which is part of the attraction of world coins. The range of interesting and beautiful coins grows exponentially when one ventures beyond the U.S. borders. For most of the countries represented in my collection, I have 1 or 2 examples at most. I’m interested in the history of the British Empire so that’s probably led me to acquiring a few more coins from the likes of Australia, Canada, India, South Africa, et al., as well as Britain itself. I also own a number of German & German States coins, partly from interest fueled by time spent there, and partly because there are just so many great German coins to choose from.
So, this was a difficult task in some areas and not so difficult in others! But here's my, for the moment, 5 favorites from my collecting categories. U.S. A beautiful proof Mercury dime. NGC PF66. Latin America. A diminutive 14mm coin minted in Philadelphia for Colombia. KM# 191. German states. Anhalt-Bernburg,1856A, 1/6 Reichstaler. Who doesn't love a bear on a wall? Italian states. Sardinia. Sold to me as an Italian lira for a great price! Has a few issues, cleaning, scratch, etc. KM# 121.1 Still an affordable example for my sub collection. And lastly, the Swiss Cantons. Hailing from Zurich this beautiful rappen coin struck- through, completely erasing the letters Z and U in Zurich and the second N in Canton.
First, America then Mexico, The UK, Canada, and Spain. If I have any time left, the world... Enjoyed your post, thanks.
German States Great Britain Portugal Angola Anything else that catches my eye, especially crown sized pre 1800 silver.
