NGC only allows USPS shipments to them … no FedEx or UPS

I didn’t submit anything to NGC last year, but had in previous years. Submitted most recently in 2020 and shipped to them via FedEx express. I have private insurance and much prefer FedEx over USPS. We live in the country and can hand the shipment directly to a FedEx driver. For USPS registered mail, the packaging must be more elaborate, have to drive into town, stand in line, drive back … and the shipping time is much longer. Yup, USPS will accept your money for a registered parcel to go priority or express, but registered mail goes at its own (slow) speed because of the security requirements. And yes, it is very secure. Can send non-registered USPS express, but my insurer charges more and still have to go into town and stand in line.

Have a shipment ready to go now to NGC, so it’s off to town to stand in line. PCGS still allows FedEx shipments to them.

I was told by our PO that if you use the Flat Rate boxes, it can still go Registered Mail at the same speed (or only slightly slower than) it would normally go via Priority Mail.

Now, since I have a recent submission I can reference for an exact transit time, I sent them a Priority Mail Flat Rate Small box on August 25 (a Wednesday, around lunchtime) and it was available for pickup on August 30 (the following Monday.)

That's not terrible - if the normal Priority Mail speed is 2-3 business days, that's a delay of one day at most?

Now, after the quality control issues I had with that particular submission, as well as past issues I've had with their handing of my coins, I won't be sending NGC any more coins for quite a while (if ever.) But that's a different question altogether.

I wish you better luck and good results on your next submission.

Life is tough. Use PCGS or bite the bullet as it is. For what it's worth, I've had better service from USPS...down on brown and fed up with fed ex.

Registered has its own speed. Sometimes its just slightly slower, other times its weeks slower. The flat rate box makes no difference in its speed though.

The answer is in your last sentence. PCGS

Registered is safe. I don't care how long it takes or how long i stand in line. All my CAC go registered. All my pcgs were but the last sub was some lowball coins. I just sent them small priority box. No problems with it. Anything else would have gone registered even though pcgs would likely just priority them back to me.

All the coins I have that I like that are in other holders get cracked out and sent to pcgs for grading and truview imaging. I like their images and holders better than the others.

I'm starting to lean that way...Tru View is awesome for the $5 charge (or standard with Gold Shield). NGC just opened the coins I sent at the end of Dec and now report an 80 day turnaround time! Express service at $80/coin still says 8 day (or something like that) turnaround time.

A M E N !!!, I have the same situation, sitting on my desk is a package neatly packaged for NGC. I live 28 miles for the P.O. and now I have to make a trip in the morning. Previously, my fedex driver would drive down my driveway pick up the package and be on his way. This new system is a PAIN IN THE ASS!

Yea its 5 to add truview or 5 to add gold shield that comes with it. Gold shield for everything for me. And resale with it is awesome. I'll buy coins that have it because they have it. I just bought one a few minutes ago lol. A 1955 d Washington quarter. Low mintage year. It was ms65 with truview. Can't pass on that. Placed a bid and even won it. No one sniped me even.

I live about 25 miles to two towns that I would have to go to mail a package at the post office. However, there is a small rural post office about 5 miles from our home. It is operated by a lady I have known for over 20 years and I have never had to wait for service. For packages that are to large to fit in our mailbox on the road, I have to pick them up at the post office. Our home is .9 miles from our mailbox. With stamped mail, we just drop them in the mailbox and the rural mail deliverer will pick them up and take them to the post office. I've lived in cities with large post offices and you are right about having to wait in line to mail a package. I love Prime from Amazon. I ordered a DVD yesterday and it was delivered today. Even UPS and FedEx will deliver to our porch.

I trust my numismatist and my eye appeal. Want, need, and desire are in there somewhere but sending my coins to a TPG, I don't think so. Good luck.

In October I sent in all my 2021 Peace and Morgans, a batch of ASEs and somebody else's Morgans by UPS to NGC. There's just a different shipping address unless they've changed something since Oct. 2021. Look on the chat board there.

There's no hurry to get it there. I just sent an express box down with EX wrote in bold on sides and it's been sitting there for 2 weeks not entered in system. So much for 6 day turn around. They're just now opening mail from Dec. 27th.

I've sent usps to both recently. Typically I prefer NGC for world coins, but have sent to PCGS recently because their turn around times are less than half of NGC. NGC is playing with fire taking so long to get things processed at this rate- they will lose a fair amount of business to PCGS of they keep being insanely slow.

See the instructions below taken from the NGC website today. I’ve looked through the website for shipping addresses, and what’s below plus the PO box number at the top of submission forms is all I found. It’s possible that FedEx or UPS to the Communications Parkway address will still work like it did in 2020, but I wouldn’t try it without contacting NGC first.

Can my coins be shipped by FedEx, UPS or another carrier?
If you have your own account with FedEx, UPS or another carrier other than USPS, please contact NGC Customer Service or 800-NGC-COIN before submitting so that we can place this information on file. We must have this information on file prior to receiving your submission.
If you do not have an account with any carriers, or if this information is not on file with NGC, your coins will be returned by USPS mail.

And it was a PO box address for submissions. Fedex and UPS by law can't deliver to PO Boxes or place things in U.S. mail boxes.

Maybe same thing applies and if you intend to use another service, you have to contact them for a different mailing address, and they will return ship on your account the same way also.

I'm not sure exactly how it works, that just seems the most logical reasoning for it.

If you have private insurance, check the policy to see if you can use Express Mail with signature instead of Registered for higher value packages. Mine gives me the same coverage either way.

PCGS allows Fedex but has a separate address for them. Not sure if they allow UPS though I would imagine the Fedex address should work for them.

ANACS is a bit weird where they recommend USPS but dont provide a separate address besides their PO Box in the instructions though its not that hard to look up the physical address.

Fedex and UPS dont insure coins at all anyways and if someone has private insurance just sending it express or priority is generally the best way. Just tape up everything and when you think youve used enough tape tape it some more. Also you can hide the label a little bit where you dont have to put PCGS/NGC/ANACS etc on the label and can put and employees name or CU for PCGS etc which at least would hide what it is somewhat during travel there.

The extra kick to the groin with NGC is after they take 1-2 months just to open the package they bill you immediately eventhough it will be several months more until they finish it. At least PCGS waits until they ship it to charge you which NGC absolutely should be doing as well right now with how slow they are.

If Im paying 100ish business days in advance for something it better be a custom car or a boat or something, not coin grading

My private insurance charges 2x for Express Mail or FedEx compared to registered mail. I usually prefer FedEx unless the shipment is very high value. FedEx is very convenient for me in the country because I have a FedEx account and can hand the parcel to any driver ... there is usually 1 or more by here every work day. FedEx 2nd day has worked flawlessly for me compared to Express Mail, which goes slower than advertised. Supposedly I can schedule a pickup of Express Mail as long as I do it at least one day in advance and pay in advance. I've never tried it but may give it a go.
