How open are you about your collecting?

Out of curiosity, how open are you to your friends and family about your coin collecting?

For me my parents & 2 best friends know I collect coins. Other then posting on here of course I tend to keep my collecting private. I used to do coin clubs as a kid but the shop that ran it closed and me growing out of it cause of jr. high and high school I just lost interest.

I would love to be more open about it but for security reasons and others looking down on it, I dont share:/

I am open to people who show an interest in currency collecting, however, I never reveal my storage location's (yes more than one SDB), Bank Name, personal contact info except to a very few folks.

My friends and family think I am insane as I check every note that is in my sight.

Yes for security reasons, one would be a fool to have garage sales which include sales of coins or be the neighborhood coin expert b/c you never know how many neighborhood friends have kids who are on crack and will rip-off anyone at the drop of a hat.

Most of my family knows and a couple of good friends, that's it. Oh and you guys and gals and my coin club membership. It may sound like alot but nobody comes over my house as me and the wife are basically loners. :eating:

 

A few close family members know I'm back into collecting, including parents and a few aunts and uncles. Another close friend, who also collects (who probably has more than me) and a couple people I am very close to at work that I spend a lot of time with. Those two are sworn to secrecy, have families, are very well off, have helped me a lot and I completely trust them. And the mailman knows. Which to me is the biggest unavoidable leak.

IMO, this is probably too many people but it's almost inevitable as time goes on. Aside from this forum, I don't associate closely with many people on a daily basis.

The main thing is, only 4 people are aware of locations and only 2 of them would be able to do anything when they got there. That's the best I can do and still have some piece of mind in the instance of my untimely demise.

I myself am latley getting coy about who i tell. One they think i am mad as rickibe has said and two dont want to get my family in any danger .dave

 

My parents know I'm into collecting, but my friends have always been VERY different people from me and I've never let them know that I collect coins. They've shot down so many of my other hobbies that I'm hesitant to really tell them about it.

 

It really does suck when people judge you by the hobbies you have. Learning about coins and the history of them is so much better then running with gangs or doing other bad deeds.:rolling:

 

I'm fairly open about it, alot of people end up asking about stuff they have and if i'll take alot at it and of course I'm more then happy to help them out

 

My husband knows. One coin collector in the family knows. Three or four of my friends know bits and pieces. The four main business people I buy coins from know.

The bank probabley knows, since they help lift the heavy boxes, and then hear me scream as the coins fall inside the private room.

Basically, some people can be difficult during difficult times. I try to avoid trouble. I do however, love talking about coins, hence why I have over 200 posts in less than a month. It is wonderful to read about coins, and other folks collections. I feel rather secure here, but I keep my Ruger nearby anyways.

 

This post has really brought up an interesting point which really makes me think I really need to join a local coin club. I am a member of two which I have never attended a meeting. I really would love to converse with fellow collectors the way I used to talk cars back in my hot rodding days.

Well, there are you folks.

The people behind me in line after I get my change as I look through it.

Anybody I catch using a CoinStar machine where I ask "What ya got there?"

Kin. Neighbors whom I swap with.

And my video rental store that requested I find them Polk today.

(I always pay them in searched small dollars I pull from rolls)

And now they request certain coins so they can forgive my late fees.

Done correctly, I think it is all fun, and tend to deal with folks that feel the same.

 

I'm somewhat open about it. My family and friends know plus it's hard to hide it at work when I'm sitting there looking at coin mags. The good thing about being in a small town is that everyone knows everything so there's no sense in hiding the facts. And everyone knows everyone so when things happen everyone knows who did it so there's very little crime.

Family and a few friends know, as well as all you guys and gals here. Other than that, "loose lips sink ships"....

 

This really depends on where you live. By me a few neighbors have already found out the best insurance for a coin collection is to keep your mouth shut. Two robberies on my block alone were for coins. One robber was a relative. The other one happened right after the person informed an insurance agent of his collection. Not that the insurance people did it of course.
In the Chicago area there are approximately 50,000 venicals stolen per year. From 500 to 800 murders per year. Way to many home invasions, store robberies, etc to even attempt to total. If your in an area like this, even mentioning a coin collection is sort of like putting hundred dollar bills on your front porch. Even having coin related magazines delivered to your place is dangerous.
I've visited areas where the people leave the doors open while they go shopping or to church. Keys are left in cars all the time. Easier to find them that way. Someone working on a coin collection might be left on the table while out doing something.
Stuff like that just is not the way of a large city.

 

I'm open about to whomever cares to talk about it. So far no one has been unusually interested. But then again I'm an NRA member and I'm very vocal about that one, so I'm guessing there's a deterrent!

Most of my friends couldn't give a damn about it and think it's fairly dorky anyway. My family knows and often give me foreign and US stuff they find in change that looks interesting.

The only thing I keep i n my safety deposit box outside of documents are the few gold coins I have. Most stuff in my apartment is just circulated common stuff, not worth a felony. But, if a crackhead wants to get in, not much we can do these days about it if we aren't there to fire off a few.

 

Only my very immediate family knows that I collect coins. TC
