Greetings everyone, I recently detected this nibbled little half penny, sadly it looks like it only recently had a run in with the plough and lost ! I'm struggling to work out which Edward it is though. The mint is clearly London, but that doesn't help much, well not to me. So therefore, I am taking the lazy option and throwing it out to you all. As ever, many thanks in advance!
I'm with scottishmoney. Those 'L's are more elaborately Lombardic than in Edwards I and II. The Gothic lettering gets increasingly frought with the 14th and 15th century.
I would tentavily say Edward II, Withers Type 11; s. 1472. Edward III is not my thing, but usualy 'stars' and Lombardic Ns.
@John Scholefield, you're absolutely right about the the association of Lombardic Ns with Edward III. I'm on your side now; Edward II.
I would say that your ha'penny is clearly Spinks 1540A, is similar to the one above. All the ha'pennies of Edward III's second coinage, 1335-43, have a six ot eight pointed star on the obverse after EDWARDVS REX AN[G]☆ . On the reverse there is either a star before ☆CIVI and after DON☆, or else no stars at all.
