First off, I've never done a GTG thread. I don't much care about the grade of this coin - I bought it because I like this kind of gold end-roll toning. (Is that what it is, or is it album toning?) I'm curious what grade you think it is and why, not as a quiz, but as an education for me. It has really nice luster which my poor photo skills don't capture. Thank you!
Ill say 64 but at times Anacs grades are off by 1 or more.very nice coin btw. What im saying is I can see Anacs putting this in a 63 holder.
Nice Half John, the obverse has fairly nice details the leg and hand show some strike weakness but overall, the thumb is separated. There is some chatter on the obverse fields. The reverse is nice and lustrous only a few bag marks. Over all I don't see anything that says AU, and it should be in a 64 holder by ANACS standards. Maybe even a 65.
I am new to the Walker series, but I am agreeing with MS 64. There are some marks in the obverse right field as well as the sun. (By the way, I love that you have a sun spot on it). There is some weakness for strike for the hand as well. Love the toning on the reverse. May be wrong, but those are my immediate thoughts.
Thanks for your comments and votes so far. @Pickin and Grinin I can definitely see the strike weakness your pointed out. @dimeguy I like the idea of a sunspot! I guess this would be a good place to post my nicest La Semeuse since it's generally agreed that Weinman drew some inspiration from the design. It seems pretty obvious to me.
I can see it in a 64 holder. The spot on the top of the Sun might knock it down to a 63. Nice coin overall.
I went 63. Some chatter, and the sun, a grade-sensitive area, is not real clean. Overall good-looking coin - like the toning.
A nice coin for sure. With the slight strike weakness, I still think it would grade 65, but that's not on your list of options. Just my opinion.
I like it as a 64, but I think ANACS called it 63 or even 58. I've had them grade some of my coins as AU58 that had zero trace of wear. I have a question about the slight green color on the reverse right in the center of the coin around where the eagle's wing joins it's body. Is that a lighting anomaly or is it possible PVC residue?
Ok, so I'm not a complete idiot when it comes to grading. ANACS gave it MS62, which I thought was low, and most of you guys seem to concur. @jtlee321 I'll check the coin for that greenish area tomorrow. It's at my office and I'm home for the day. I'll post some more pics over the weekend.
I was thinking, before I saw the reveal, that it was a 63, mainly due to marks in the obv field and muted luster.
Too low to me...coin wasn't up long enough to see before reveal but to me a strong 64, with the toning a help to that end and not a hindrance. Grading is subjective enough without toning factored in. Nice coin.
I will say AU55 as the luster is somewhat low and what appears to be wear on the hand. It could be a weak strike, but it just doesn't look that way to me.
