I would greatly appreciate opinions on the value and condition of these bills. I have two 1899 series Black Eagle Silver Certificates (FR# 233 and 235) and four 1923 series certificates (3 FR#237& 1 FR#238) from my mother's estate that must be disposed of.

I have posted high resolution photos of each side of these bills in a Flickr PhotoSet here: Big Money PhotoSet The high res pics are those showing only one side of the bill. They are directly off the scanner and are approx 2300 pixels on the long side. The can be seen by clicking on the 'All Sizes' link on the Flickr Photopage.

This Friedbegr #233 1899 Series Black Eagle is the nicest and in the best condition of the lot. It is signed by John Burke and Houston B. Teehee This dates the bill between March 1915 and Nov 1919. This was the dollar in use on my mother’s birthday and through World War I. I am particularly interested in the value of this bill because I would like to keep it and I need to be fair to my sisters.

This bill is signed by Frank White Treasurer and William S. Elliot , Register of the Treasury. This dates the bill between May of 1921 and January 1922. This bill is Friedberg Catalog #235. This bill is in the worst condition of the lot. There is edge fraying and pinholes near the upper left corner. There is a very detailed photo in the Flickr set that highlights the damage. See it for yourself here. The All Sizes link there will show this best.

The Friedberg # 237 bill above is the best of the Series 1923 bills.

Also a FR# 237 as is the one below.

The bill below is FR #238.

With exception of the Black Eagle FR#235 described above there are no holes or tears.

Please take a look at the high resolution images in my photoset. Your comments and opinions are welcome and requested. Any guidance on describing condition or recommendations about reserve price if these should go to an auction would be very helpful.

Since no one has remarked on this, I thought I would.

The Teehee/Burke is in better condition than the other Black Eagle.

In "Fine" you could expect around $100- $115 for this note..as the condition worsens so does the value. The Series 1923 examples you have are very worn some ar stained and all have lots of circulation and since there are plenty of these available in CHCU condition will not draw much of a premium in my opinion.
So you asked for an opinion and I gave it, it may not be what you expected but hey, I am trying to be honest. Let me state that I am a collector and by no means an expert in Numismatics (Paper Money)

Just knowing that your mom had these and to keep them is worth far more than any $$$ value for these notes. It is awkward at times when nice folks like you ask this question....so to better get a handle on what you have I will suggest you do the following:

    1. Establish a free acoount at http://currency.ha.com/c/index.zx?ic=homepage_browse and browse the archives for up to date pricing info.

Good luckand what nice memories these should bring you.

    Regards,

Thanks for the response and the information. Honest opinion from knowledgeable folks like yourself are exactly what I am looking for. The currency grading tutorial found at the recommended site is very helpful.
