How to change joy into

sadness. This beautiful coin arrived today, and as with all auction wins I peel off the auction house label.
Other wise this would have been a like new old slab.

Very sorry to see that happen. I am very careful when I peel off vendor stickers just to avoid this very problem. And I never put my own stickers over the slab's stickers.

Do you think NGC might reslab it for you gratis?

I'd definitely let the auction house hear about this. I'm sure they're very proud of their brand, but they need to promote it in ways that don't damage the goods they're selling. Wonder if they'd put the same kind of sticker on a vintage book?

 

Nice coin, even if the stickers ruined the slab.
With the advent of new adhesives, one hopes that in the future, people will only use those that are easily removed, and leave no residue.

 

On those old type NGC slabs are known for doing that.

I am building the war Nickle set and only want the older slabs.
Anyway I don't think they do very much for no charge.

 

It seems like there could be an easy solution for these older slabs: use a plastic bag (like the one in the link below) for the holder and put the sticker on the bag.

Makes me think about antique stores that use letter label stickers for price tags adhered directly to wood furniture surfaces.

 

I had a 1916 Buffalo nickel in an old fatty slab. It to lost the hologram from having a sticer placed over it..

 

I would demand a refund. If you paid by credit card, institute a chargeback.

 

If you like it enough and it bothers you, send it in for a re-holder. You won't see it again for 3 months but when it comes back you'll have a crystal clear edge view. I've sent a bunch in the last couple of years because you can't even photograph stuff because of the marks.
Maybe you could piggy back on another submission.

 

Well… Now wait a second. The coin doesn’t need to be reholdered. All it needs is a replacement hologram sticker. If I were assembling a set with matching slabs, at the very least I would send an email to NGC and ask if they would consider replacing the hologram sticker for you.

 

Don't Panic!

 

I use a very thin layer of a removal substance and with a small razor blade scraper I gently remove the sticker. I very seldom have a problem with this method but as you know "crap happens." Just an idea.

 

It's only ones and zeros!

 

I have a classic commemorative where the hologram send to chipping off. But, the thing is about 30 years old at this point, so I suppose it was bound to happen.

 

They don't make the holograms like they did on those older holders. And I don't believe NGC has ever fixed a holder before-they will just suggest to reholder (at the person's own cost).

It is unfortunate but I'd just leave everything as is. The holder is still in good shape, you can see the coin, and the coin looks nice.
