I didn't want to bump the old thread but wanted to share the news I found out.

This 1886 nicely toned Morgan seemed optimistically graded to me back in 2018 and I sold it soon after acquiring it.

A future buyer found out that the coin used to be in an old NGC 65 star holder and part of the Battle Creek Collection. Someone got it back in an NGC 65 star holder with the Battle Creek Collection. Recently it was sent back to PCGS and graded MS 64 (the grade I thought it deserved).

So now you have the full story as I know it (original Battle Creek NGC 65* -> PCGS 65 CAC -> new holder Battle Creek NGC 65* -> PCGS 64 CAC Battle Creek).

    Recent NGC:

    Now PCGS 64:

Those NGC pics... but better than nothing, and not so costly as well.

Whoever thought they would do better than a 65* and sent it back to PCGS o_O oh boy.

Well it was a PCGS 65 CAC already, so I'm not sure why someone decided to send it back and forth so many times. I can understand sending to PCGS to add the battle creek pedigree (which can help add a few hundred dollars based on what I've seen) but it would have to go as a reholder (not a regrade).

I make no attempt to guess a grade, but seems to me that this shows the difference in the TPG services and I think the owner lost money on the transition. Too bad.

Someone lost money along the way.
I got out of it ok in 2018. I didn't make a lot (someone else did as the toner market has increased quite a bit since 2018).

Give it some time. If we are talking about market grade, I think that it will get back to where it should be IMO at a 65, the coin has aged well. Technically a 64, Was the last photo yours? It matches quite well with the TV.

Yes the last photo was mine. It didn't show all the hits that could be seen in hand. I found the GC photo too which shows the hits better. I think 64 is a fair grade. 65 is not terrible as a market grade but I'd prefer it stay as a 64. I do agree with you that it will almost certainly find its way back into a 65 holder.

I can see why you were concerned, that is one beautiful Morgan deserving of the better grade. Thanks for sharing.
