I saw an interesting and uncommon Roman Republican struck Asse recently. The seller's pics are below. I found only two examples online. One was in the RBW sale (437) and this coin. Roman Republic, Luceria 206 - 195 BC; AE, fraction of a struck Asse; P second series. Obv - bottom half of a Janus head, P below Rev - top / back half of a Roman warship; mark of value - I, above; [before - P; below - ROMA] BB+/BB. Patina verde, R. grams mm 2h, I do not have weight or diameter yet, but rotation is obvious from the pics. Crawford 99/1a. BMCRR Italy 257-264 Syd 306 RBW 437 Twelve-year-old me thinks this is a GREAT coin. How often do you get to say half-as and P in the same coin description? I wonder what kind of value was placed on a small coin that was cut in half? Did it carry a value of 6 VNCIA = 1 Semis? While looking for other Cr991a's I noticed a Sextans of the same series. It has a P between the two dots inex on the reverse. I do not remember seeing a letter between dots like that.
you know… wouldn’t life be more fun if we all stepped back from all of todays problems, and just took that 12 year-old perspective on everything… Regardless: Great Coin! Really nice, Gene. And, interesting Sextans.
Just gobsmacking stuff, as always @rrdenarius Lovely detail for a half as P coin Any idea if size and weight? Here's a whole as and a bunch of half asses that Ijust took some quick pics of from the cabinet:
