Can anyone here afford submitting to NGC?

To a large degree they have done away with the day of the shyster dealer who took adavantage of the unknowing collectors on a daily basis. They have pointed out all of the counterfeits, coins with added mnint marks, coins that have been whizzed, harshly cleaned, artificially toned, tooled or otherwise a problem coin of some kind.

So no, the TPGs haven't ruined the hobby. The TPGs have done this hobby the greastest service it has ever seen - or likely will see.

I will agree to disagree.....for the following reasons...
As a young collector in the early 60's I was so excited going to coin shows with my uncle Bill who he and my Dad got me started in coin collecting. In thoses days there were no TPG's... coin clubs and shows were places where collectors met and talked , traded and sold their coins. Times were simpler....yeah there was and always will be shysters but collecting was a fun and enjoyable hobby. You sat down as gentleman talked about your coins and sold or traded coins to add to your collection. Now as stated in other post by me... I am a member of PCGS & NGC....only because in this day and age you almost need be. Yes TPG's have dome alot for this hobby...but.....maybe they should as the money they make on grading is excessive! To me they have taken a hobby that was fun and rewarding and put it in a plastic wrapper! Yes I do understand protecting a coin and preserving it .....but again in my early days of collecting it was fun holding a coin not something wrapped in a shield . Kointains, 2x2's and airtights are all I really care to see a coin put into....at least you can still hold the coin. And again yes I do have some of my better coins in slabs.....and always feel like cracking them out...I guess I'm just a product of a time that things were different. Holding a slab to me is like showering in a rain coat! Just don't feel right, or look right . Yes TPG's have put alot into this hobby but again most business do put money back into the main stream to increase their business! Sorry guys maybe TPG are necessary in todays world...but I for me I wish everyone here could of been a member of the coin club I was a part of in the 60's ......! Guess I'm the brick & mortal type and will never forget and very special time in my life! Paddy:hammer:

Very interesting little movie. I don't believe I mentioned that the date in the article was April, 1973. This is when ETCM and a news crew had permission to do a story while the CC dollars were being packaged. If your really in to it, Arnie Margolis and Fred Weinburg were the 2 gentlemen that inspected the " oddball " CC's. You could probably get a little more accurate info...

Amazingly enough Paddy, I experienced the exact same things you did. I began collecting coins in 1960 with my grandfather. So I am well aware of what it was like then. And I have never in my life submitted even 1 coin to any TPG for grading or authentication. I always stored my coins in 2x2's until Air-Tites came along, then they all went into the Air-Tites. Other than the ones I had purchased already slabbed of course.

Other than the difference in our opinions of whether or not the TPGs were a good thing - you'd be hard pressed to distinguish your story from mine ;)

We do the same things today, raw or slabbed.

Perhaps. Sometimes the fees do seem a little high, particularly attribution. It would be interesting to see their "bottom line" and "return on capital". Though it's popular to accuse them of charging too much, we don't appreciate the complexity of their business. There's much involved in what they do.

    It's still fun and rewarding.

When I talk to friends outside the hobby, they find it odd that anyone would spend big money on a raw coin ! The idea of certified coins seems obvious to them. It's easy to see why.

I really appreciate the nostalgia, Paddy. It's a big part of the reason I got back into the hobby. Perhaps we can enjoy the fond memories of "the good old days" while appreciating the advantages the Internet and certified coins have added to the hobby.

Perhaps we can truly "have our cake and eat it too".

    No I can't afford NGC's prices ... Grossly inflated

Hi, I have used ICG for British and Commonwealth coins. I have used NGC and PCGS. I find the NGC pricing structure to be overinflated and I have found the grading variable. I have found PCGS consistent buy not very helpful and pricey if before 1955. I seek quality protection for my rare coins and an honest grade. ICG has been right on the mark for the many world (UK, South African, New Zealand, Australia, Indian ...) coins I have sent to be graded. Their grading has been consistent and accurate. I like their level of professionalism and understatement. At 12 dollars per coin for a value grade (under 500 dollars in pecuniary worth), it represents excellent value for money. As a secondary matter, I appreciate the ability to customise the label with my own collection signature since my coins are part of an extensive and respected series. Politics and dealer bias aside, I find ICG well worth it as an investment in the security and pedigree of my coins. --CP--

Gotta love NGC. They do a great job and better than PCGS, this is only my opinion.:thumb:
