There's a strange line going through monticello and as much as I want to believe it's a strike through because of the lettering peaking through the line, I'm pretty sure its just a scratch because of the way the I in America seems to be shoved out of the way to make room for whatever marked it. What do you guys think?
Thanks for the quick and useful reply, I think I'll recirculate it, I got plenty nickels from the 50's and not nearly enough from the 40's or 30's, hopefully It'll make someone else as happy as it would've made me when I started collecting. Thanks though!
Last week I just dumped about 5 dollars worth of some my worn semi-higher mintage nickels - like 1940,41,46,54D etc.... I've had them for over 20 years and it still seems like they will never gain any significant. Even at my coin club - no one is ever interested in them unless its face. With the 56D, It's probably good to just move it along.
One way to tell damage (a scratch), verses error, is to look for displaced metal. I can see displaced metal along the scratch so it confirms damage to me.
