1945 LWC- Split planchet????

Look at this 1945 penny who has seen better days. My guess is old damage??

Looks like it split after the strike.
They call it a clamshell planchet.

Wow. Never seen one that extensive. Usually just a small portion of the edge. That's a great coin. Is it considered a planchet error? I should think so.
